I've been saving up for a new laptop (looking at the eMachines m6809) and some mods for it. I want to put a 1gb stick of sodimm in there, because it supposedly maxes out at 1.2gb, and it has 2 x 256mb in there already (and the second stick of 256mb is kind of hard to get at without ripping the whole laptop apart, and since I want a powerful machine, I figure replacing the first 256mb stick with a 1gb stick is a good option - that would bring my total to 1.2gb). I've been looking into different brands/prices and I came across this at Newegg:

Transcend 200-Pin 1GB DDR SODIMM PC-2700 w/ Mosel Chipset Memory Module - Retail

The cost is $299.00. Pretty steep, but I'm planning on using this laptop throughout college, and I do computer graphics, so the more memory, the better.

The other option I found was a stick of Crucial with the same specs:

1GB ? DDR PC2700 ? Unbuffered ? Non-parity ? DDR333 ? 2.5V ? 128Meg x 64

Downside - costs $479.99. An extra $180 is a lot of money for me since I'm still paying for school and all...but I'd rather pay for something I know will be stable than something I'm not sure about. If Transcend is good, then that will free up $180 that I can use for a faster hard drive or something.

So...has anyone had a good or bad experience with Transcend RAM? I've done some googling and have only found a few reviews of them. Transcend's website is here and a PDF data sheet on the 1GB SODIMM can be found here.

It may just be better to put in a couple of 512mb Corsair sticks, but I wanted to find out if Transcend was a valid option first.

Also, has anyone used Transcend flash memory cards? I was looking at some compactFlash cards for my digital camera, and Newegg had some big Transcend cards for pretty cheap. For the most part, they seem to have good reviews and ratings on Newegg.

This Transcend card only has a two-star rating, no reviews, but the price is good and the storage is huge - $170 for a 2.2gb compactFlash card. Compare that to a hi-speed 512mb card over at Dell.com for $100...this card seems like a good deal. But again, I don't want to blow my money on a crappy product. I use a regular 128mb card right now, which works fine (not hi-speed...the camera is just a point-and-shoot Kodak), and I want a bigger card for when I go on vacation and won't have my computer around to download photos to. It almost seems like one of those "too good to be true" cheapo products...I can't seem to find a reputation for Trascend, but they seem like a good deal.

So...any thoughts on Transcend memory would be much appreciated. TIA!

cheers,
Kaido
