Train ride this weekend Any suggestions?

I've always enjoyed train travel. More civilized than flying these days. Pack a book, iPod, and a light snack with you. There will be food on the train but it's usually expensive. Other than that, just relax and enjoy the scenery.

Suggestions for a train ride? Seriously? How about sit there and then get off when you get to your destination?

I used to take the train from San Luis Obispo to Seattle a couple times a year.

I'm serious, take something to watch movies with and find a drinking partner. The lower compartments have power outlets near the doors that you can use.

Take food, the onboard food is ridiculously expensive and sucks for what it costs.

FYL: Eff Your Life...

I took a 6 hour train ride two years ago. Terrible and uncomfortable. My ass was vibrating so much that I couldn't sleep (6am ride). Loud too.

Train is fairly relaxing, it's kinda rough like a bus but way more room and the restaurant car is a bonus, but given you're on a track, more controlled. You can put a drink on the ground or on a table and it will stay, it might just move around a little from the bumps. I recently went on a train ride to Toronto, I'd totally do it again. Beats the bus, or driving. Just sit back and relax. If you're with someone who's talkative just go with it, you'd be surprised how fast it goes if you're having conversations, even if all you want to do is sleep.

I took the train/bus a lot over the last 4 years. I went to school in Guelph, but my parents live outside Ottawa. The train is crazy expensive compared to the bus, and isn't really all that much better. It's not any faster, and not very much more comfortable. They've been buying new Greyhounds here, and for half the price, with equal leg room, free wifi, and power outlets, I'd take the bus over the train. Sure, there's no snack cart, but the bus stops half way through at a store that sells everything.

Of course the business car on the train is pretty nice, they would always let us sit in it between Guelph and Toronto because it was usually empty.

Taking my first long distance train ride this weekend, LA to SF.

Any suggestions/experiences with train trips?

Coast Starlight right?

Last time I was on that there was an old Parlor car. It was pretty cool. If it's still attached to that train, check it out.

bring a blanket. The seats in coach are far apart and comfy, and stretch back pretty nicely, but bring a blanket 🙂

Eat in the dining car. They will seat you with random people. It's pretty neat.
