Train Does Led Zeppelin II

I heard these guys on Howard Stern this morning on my commute in and they sound fantastic! They played 4 covers of Led Zeppelin this morning in Howard's SiriusXM studio, Ramble On, Livin' Lovin' Maid, Heartbreaker and Moby Dick. Honestly, they sound spot on.

If you like Zeppelin you should check these guys out. They are really good. I believe they're touring and playing these songs live in concert too along with Train songs.

They are releasing the album this Friday and it is available on vinyl too.

Good to see they're still putting out good stuff. More importantly, good to see real musicians are still relevant.

EDIT: Looks like there's a live stream of a concert at 4PM PST on youtube.

It is also on SiriusXM this Friday and is going to be re-aired all weekend.

Also, while I agree it's a great attempt, you can't forget to mention those behind the scenes that make this all happen. The audio guys really came through on this. Zeppelin is NOT an easy sound to replicate... assuming you're using original album as reference and not live stuff.

I'll have to watch this. Actually had a chance to see Train live a couple of months ago and they still sound pretty good.

Good covers, would be worth checking them out live.

Not knocking em, but I'd still just listen to the originals at home.

I would be amazing to see them perform this live. I think they're only doing 6 shows though for this tour and I think they're all sold out already... which sucks. I'm too young to have seen Zeppelin live so this would be about the next best thing.

Howard joked that Pat should wear a long blonde wig and dress up like Robert Plant with a belly shirt and tight pants for the tour.

I'm the world's biggest Zeppelin fan, but I have to ask: WHY did they do this? They made an album that sounds just like the original. We already had an album that sounds like that...what's the point?

+1000.

Ok, this is the popular whimpy band Train, with the lead singer that I swear is 15 years older than he admits. Drops of Jupiter?, that band?

Ok, he's a good singer and they're a good band. But yea, those studio tracks aren engineered out the wazoo. Really amazing work though.

Here's a live clip, without all the studio processing and overdubs. Still good, but not the second coming. This sounds like Train singing Zep. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MX_jo9lKXMw

Also, any Zep fans should check out these two tributes.

Zoso -- They nail the Zep live show. Hammer of the Gods.

Get The Led Out -- They recreate the studio experience. As many players as it takes to play all the overdubs....live. And you get to hear songs that the real Zep never or rarely played live. It's such a neat experience hearing the fuller sound in a live setting.

I try to see these guys whenever they're around. The lead singer is fantastic. Also a notable mention is that they really use a theremin for 'Whole Lotta Love' - really sweet to see.

Highly recommended if they come through your town.

Seen them twice. I agree- they're good at reproducing the albums, but it kills be a bit as a musician because I want to see them have some fun with the material instead of being to cookie-cutter.

There's a cover band called Led Zeppelin 2 (coincidentally) that puts on a pretty darn good recreation of their live material. Worth a look:

I agree. Being a musician means being creative ... but not everyone in attendance is in that boat. For some of the older folks, I would imagine they want to hear what they remember on the album. In any case, whatever they're doing, I'm jealous ... because it's working for them. Albeit it's probably mindless to them, playing exactly as recorded, but it's still fun and a good show regardless. Their shows always seem to be sold out.

They were talking with Howard about why they play these songs and they do it because it is challenging and they enjoy it. And people really seem to dig it. It's hard to play those songs and not every musician is capable of playing them. They have to practice quite a bit to be able to play an entire set of Led Zeppelin music.

Shouldn't playing music be fun for the band and the audience? Isn't that the whole point of making music? I mean, #1 on the pop charts is fine for a lip synching tatted up fool like Justin Bieber but this is real musicians performing real music. Not some idiot dancing around on the stage pretending to be a rock star miming to his autotune laden studio recording.

Wow great covers.

Ramble on - my favorite.

Mine's a tale that can't be told, my freedom I hold dear.
How years ago in days of old, when magic filled the air.
T'was in the darkest depths of Mordor, I met a girl so fair.
But Gollum, and the evil one crept up and slipped away with her, her, her....yeah.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying they don't have talent. Practice makes perfect. There are very few natural born, talented guys out there .. and even still, those guys practice every day. Whether sports, music, etc, it stills remains true.

There's a part inside every musician that loves to jam though. Whatever comes to mind - play it. LZ did this all the time during live shows turning original 4 minute songs into 25 minute songs. Of course not everyone is a musician, so they don't (and shouldn't) do that. A ton of well known musicians do collaborative albums, covering stuff they listened to and learned growing up. This is really common in the blues genre - Clapton/BB/Buddy/SRV/Albert King/Etc. I would imagine that is the case here. They keep it safe and play what the majority of people probably want to hear - Led Zeppelin as they remember on the album. Not only did they nail it as musicians, but the engineers and behind-the-scenes people came through on it as well. If they are having fun and not hurting anyone, that's really all that matters.
