Traditional Chinese medicine, BS or does it work?

You mean those herbal teas that taste extremely bitter? I've used it before and it works but I'd much rather go see a doctor and take a shot.

the more 'western' you are and the more 'ancient' and 'mystic' your view of the 'orient' is, the more it works for you.

When I hurt my knee, my grandma insisted that I cover it in this black, herbal smelling goo. It didn't do a damn thing except make my knee smell like exotic spices and tea.

Chinese people also love their Tiger Balm Ointment (wan jin you), which just smells and feels like really strong Vaporub to me, but my grandma uses it on bug bites, cuts, scapes, rashes, sores, bruises, etc. It never worked for me except make me feel sick from the smell.

Do you mean that green stuff in a bottle?

Or the Vaporub with a quarter on your back?

THE QUARTERS!!!!! AHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've never done the quarter thing. I'm talking about this stuff that has a vasoline like texture in a little jar.

I think it's mostly BS, with a healthy dose of placebo effect helping out. I do think the Eastern idea of balance (Yin & Yang, etc) which is behind much of it is a good one though. Further, there are likely nuggets of truth interspersed in it. For instance, suppose monkey anus is supposed to relieve pain. You look into it a bit more and find that only one species of monkeys' anus does the trick. Look into it further and find that this species of monkey considers willow bark a delicacy... Mmm hmm... Makes perfect sense - but I'll take my aspirin the new-fashioned way, tyvm!

Depends. Some work, some don't. The bitter herbal teas that they make you take works, as I think its the one that has ephedra in it.

BS

its all based on peasant ingnorance. Working in Boulder I have friends and co-workers who swear by their chinese herbalist. These same people absoutly hate western medicine, they say its crude and only treats the symptoms (ill grant some credit for that because its true to some extent) but eastern medicine treats the root problem. :disgust:

from personal experience, some do work (and well too) and some don't. i guess its just like western medicine. some work some don't. but in general, i think you're safer with western medicine.

placebo bs
and irresponsible abuse of animals of which many are endangered. the practice needs to be wiped out.

not really, they are just benifiting from the trickle down of medical/health/food advances from the west
http://www.fte.org/capitalism/introduction/02.php

take any numbers from china with a grain of salt anyways, that type of regiem is known for coverups

I bet many of you who say they are just placebo or BS have never used chinese medicine or just used it a few times. The majority of them (if you know which ones to buy) work and only a few doesn't work (the few that doesn't work are usually "fake" stuff and/or no brand).

Well they've been doing it for thousands of years and it's been working for thousands of years. I find it funny that young kids on an internet messageboard think their opinion outweighs something like that.
