Well, I've been hearing good things about Trader Joe's for quite some time, and I even shopped at one while I was out in California earlier this summer. One of the most awesome things about Trader Joe's is their unique beer and wine selection. By now everyone's heard of "Two Buck Chuck" and even the Wall Street Journal wine guide as included recommendations on Trader Joe's wines. So you can imagine how pleased I was to learn that there was a Trader Joe's a few miles down the street from where I lived.

Now imagine my horror when I walk in, roam around, and realize my store doesn't have ANY beer or wine!! :| :| :| I walk up to the store manager and ask him what's up, and he tells me that local laws don't allow beer or wine sales in supermarkets. "Bullsh**", I tell him, "my local Safeway has beer and wine in the store!" He asks me if I live up by Briggs Chaney, and I say yes. He smiles and says, "That store is grandfathered in. They bought out a local liquor store and built a grocery store on their premises, so their license to sell is based on the old company's name."

Apparently the legislation isn't state law, but a Montgomery County law that prohibits national retailers (i.e. WalMart, Safeway, Trader Joe's, other chains) from selling beer, wine or spirits. This was enacted to protect local mom and pop liquor stores from price competition, and to maintain the Three Tier distribution system (some national retailers have found ways to circumvent this.) All I know is this is one surefire way to PISS OFF any beer and wine connoisseurs! I haven't checked the laws in neighboring Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties, but its pointless because all Trader Joe's locations listed on the site say no beer and wine in Maryland.

I feel your pain, dude. I just moved to Rockville 3 months ago and found out the same fvcking thing! Montgomery County has some of the most back-asswards laws. I'll ask one of my coworkers to make a list of all the crap that's different ONLY in Montgomery County again. It was priceless and REALLY aggrivating all at the same time.

EDIT: w00t! for making my 200th post in just under 2 years! HA!

OK, so how is this a Trader Joe's problem? If liqour sales are restricted by state/local law, wouldn't that be a governmental/regulatory issue?

I didn't say it was their problem, or that I was mad at them. I just said they're pretty much useless for me now, since I don't eat any of that weird organic food (I still need to explore it though.) I'm sure Trader Joe's tried to do what Safeway did (buyout a local store and build on top) but that wouldn't work since they do all their own distribution deals and have unique alcoholic products.)

Up on Colesville, eh?
I don't remember but I think the ones down in Virginia might have alcohol.

There's plenty of other tasty stuff at TJ's besides the Two Buck Chuck. For us office zombies, their frozen packaged meals are a godsend.

Well after posting this thread, I just had a Trader Ming noodle box for lunch (the Pad Thai) and it was the best instant noodles I've ever had. A bit pricey at $2 a box, but a better option than eating in the cafeteria every day.

lol I've lived in MD all my life and never once walked into Trader Joes. Also the grocery store I worked at for 8 years through HS and college sells wine and beer no problems, but then again, they are a mom and pop shop.

Yeah, and there's another one In Bailey's Crossroads a few more miles down 7. All the Trader Joe's I've been to in Virginia carry alcohol.

I like TJ's, and go there every couple weeks, but I think their beer and wine selection is overrated. Besides two buck chuck, which I find medicore at best, I would much rather go to BevMo to shop for beer and wine.

Trader Joe's is like the best grocery store ever! The one on Pickett in VA has been open for 5-6 years now and can't believe that I have lived w/o it!

The one I go to doesn't have the greatest selection of alcohol, but decent, have picked up many a good 6-pack from there! Their frozen vegetables are amazing, the meringes rule and they have the best (commercial) brautworst.

I'm not sure what the problem is. Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Wild Oat and similar stores carry a decent selection, but it's usually nothing at all like a good wine/beer merchant.

Seriously, if you're looking for a good wine selection go to a store where their primary focus is selling wine. You'll have better options, greater variety, and likely a discounting system for cases, orders, etc.
