Do you not have them in your area?

If you don't, and you hadn't waited until the 23rd, I'm sure some AT'er would have been happy to pick one up for you if you had sent the money and an envelope along. (At least I would have.)

just moderately annoyed that I'll have to make the drive and waste the gas/time for a piece of plastic that every single other store in the entire world that is, was, and will be sells online ;)

my cousin and her girlfriend won't be on the east coast till the end of next week, so I figured I was fine tagging it onto the rest of my last minute shopping.

Why do you want to buy a gift card from Trader Joe's? Do they give you more $$ like if you buy $50 card, you get $60 worth of credit? If it's the same amount, why trade one item that has universal use (US money) for something of restricted value that can only be used at one company (gift card).

I can see the value if say a restaurant offered $100 gift card for $75. Getting 33% more in value by giving up worldwide flexibility of the dollar could be a good trade. But 1:1 cash to gift card trade is retarded.

I'm just looking for something to stick in the card along with the main gift... cash is tacky and at least a gift card says "hey, I pay attention when we talk and I know where you like to shop."

I never met a person who didn't like cash or turned it down. Cash > credit.

I dunno... it's always just seemed kinda tacky to me. to be honest, I don't even really like giving gift cards :p

I only ever give cash as a gift if it's for a kid (under 16) or a wedding (I always try and give cash over checks at weddings so that the bride and groom have a nice chunk of immediately available cash to take with them on their honeymoon).

thanks  I'm good, though... I've got till like Thursday, so I'll probably just suck it up and go there on the 26th-27th :)

Yes, those gift card deals where they are essentially giving away extra value are great, but they're few and far between.

Americans have a mysterious obsession with gift cards. No one can claim that a $50 gift card is better than a $50 bill. Why do people buy these things?

It seems tacky to you because everyone else does gift cards, too. What exactly makes cash tacky? Why can you only give cash to children? If someone offered you $20, would you insist that they go buy a gift card and give you that instead? No, of course you wouldn't. Why should the holidays be any different? Cash + card even seems more natural than GC + card. You even recognize that up to 16 you receive cash + card, so why does that have to change?

Best Buy tried to charge tax when a friend of mine bought one of their gift cards. That's right; they wanted to essentially double tax the gift card (once to put the money in and once when the card is used to buy something). I had never heard of that happening before.

cash is tacky? Well then I'm a tacky person because I like cash. Gift cards tied to 1 store are cool if you love that store, for the people who like giving gift cards, the Visa gift cards are great ideas. Use them anywhere visa's accepted and you won't feel as "tacky" because you didn't actually give cash.

Personally I think that weird brown & yellow sweater my aunt gave me when I was 16 was tacky but that's just me :)

Can't you get those visa gift cards from several places? I know my local mall has them. It's damn near like cash, but less tacky.

Judging by their success, I am pretty sure that I am the last person on the planet that thinks gift cards are a tacky "false sentiment" alternative to cash. At least cash can be used for anything, including illicit drugs...

Visa giftcards suck because they charge a fee so you don't get 100% of the card's value at your disposal. Cash all the way.

I'm not sure why cash is considered tacky. Some of you folks are just weird.
