In my Epox 4G4A+, this thing is only stable at 2.826ghz and below, but I can boot all the way past 3.25ghz. I don't think its my mobo as it did this same thing in an IC7. The person I got the processor from (for doing some work) bought 2 and one is running at 3.150ghz at 1.575vcore in his IC7. (On a side note, with that overclock and in the IC7 his Gainward ti4200 was finally able to be overclocked- he is hitting ~14200 3Dmarks - I assume that is decent for a budget card).

The whole point of this thread is to ask a question. This processor runs 5-6C hotter than the other 2.4B (several installs to verify) and about the same amount hotter than my 1.8A ran at the same speed. Do I have a bum IHS or is there that much variance in temperatures between same batch chips?

(Trying to decide if I freak out and pull my IHS off........:) )

from my experience the 4g4a mobo is exremely limited as I was really only able to get 169fsb to work and even then the memory cuoldn't barely be above rated spec....Not a good board for ocing period....Trust me I tried 2 of them...

As for the IC7 I think the board is too new and is widel;y known to have issues running under 200fsb....

If you can get the thing to boot at 3.25ghz but only stable at 2.8ghz then it is definitely mobo related...especially if you have memory set at 1:1 ratio and lowest timings to take that out of the equation....

Mine did 169-170fsb but then only booted a max 10 more fsb...you have 450 more mhz or near 25-28fsb more....

as for heat I have seen 2-3 just in different reaplications sometimes....I think the 5-6 can be legit as a variable in the chips...

Well I guess I will be good and not remove the IHS then. This is still faster than I was and I have no money for upgrading so my 4G4A+ is it for a while.

Thanks for responding.

I would not agree with that. Plenty of people including myself and PJ are running just peachy under 200 FSB.

I just moved my 2.4B SL6EF from an Albatron 845PE to the IC7. Overclock is exactly the same. 170 FSB @ 1.575 in BIOS, ~ 1.55 actual. On both of them, I hit the lots of extra Vcore for a little more FSB wall above 170 FSB.

If your CPU has the same overclock in two different boards, that is likely all it will do.

Yeah, I didn't think the IC7 was one of the Canterwoods with the 166-199 problem (thought it was a bios problem - non award). Thats why I recommended it to my friend, who is extremely happy at 175fsb (2.4C) @ 1.575vcore. It can run 3.2ghz (178fsb) @ 1.6vcore, but turned it down so the summer heat won't be an issue. Overall I was extremely impressed with that board, its manufacturing, ease of use and stability.

Hmmm...so just the asus p4c800 is having problems????

I though thugs had to work around the NB strap to take care of issues under 200fsb...I thought I read that in his thread just a week back!!!

I think the N/B strap effects the memory timings and changes how well it runs. I don't think he changed it to get it to run, just to score better.

P.S. There is a new bios out that seems to fix the P4C800 fsb gap, but seems to have introduced an issue with SATA raid.

The Asus 165 - 199 FSB hole has been fixed with a BIOS update
The Abit IC7 overridden cas settings have also been fixed with a BIOS update.
