I know that KBB is not the greatest source of pricing but if I want a GTI for 22k and my KKB trade-in for a "good" condition 9-5 is around 15.5k, what do dealerships usually offer for the trade-in? Does it depend on the car you are getting? How close is the offer price to what KBB has down?

Anyone have any experience with this and $$ ranges?
 
Even if your car is in "Excellent" or "Good" condition, you are likely going to see trade in values in the "Fair" range or lower. You are going to be limited because you are buying new. There's only so much built in profit on a new car. Used vehicles typically have much more wiggle room in negotiating price and what your "trade" value is.
 
According to KBB the trade in value for my 04 Explorer in excellent condition was $8825, ours wasn't in excellent, between excellent and good. We got $9600 from the dealer, and we did buy a new car.
 
What you get in a trade depends on what you are trading and where the money is to be made in the deal.

If you get a lot for your trade, then I guarantee you are not getting the best deal on what you are buying. If they heavily discount the purchase then you will be getting less for your trade.

No matter what the dealer will make a profit. That is what they are in business to do. Your best option is to negotiate the sale and the trade separately. Harder and a bigger headache, but it puts more power in your hands.
 
NO. Please sell that private party. Saving a G may be worth it to avoid the hassle with a cheap car, but if you're talking several thousand, I'd PP that bad boy.

I doubt the dealer made much on me. I bought a Saab the day after GM said they were dropping Saab for dead. Instant $15k drop in price. That dealer has 1 Saab left, and they had it when I bought mine, I believe they are just trying to get rid of the last one and close their doors.
 
My sister got about double what her Corolla was worth when she traded it in two years ago for a new Altima. It really depends on how good you are at negotiating, and how you're getting your new car. If you are financing or leasing your new vehicle through the automaker, you will likely get a higher trade-in.

excellent is never offered. It'd need to be showroom condition realistically.

Most peg their cars too optimistically...most of my cars I have always done something each day too. Between detailing each weekend, I get the birdcrap off, touch up nicks, etc.

I am not assuming I am getting excellent even if it's under mileage. I do expect a mileage credit at very good/good condition.

I have only traded in one car, my 97 GTI VR6 I bought new. The salesman was actually looked for the same car...I had the white on black leather he wanted. A professionally tuned suspension, and a ton of nice mods...(http://30moons.com/cars97GTIVR6.php)

The pics don't do it justice. It was a really nice standing car in person....sounded awesome as well. The VR6's exhaust tone has been compared to the V12 Ferrari's

Valets at high end restaurants used to have it right up front. At around $18k out the door + mods, it was a great bang for buck car.
