Fixed. Dunno why people buy things with resale value as a big factor. I thought people buy things to enjoy them. Vehicles != investments.

Yes, but you don't normally expect a $40,000 SUV to be worth half that a year after you buy it...not even an American made SUV. At $4/gallon SUVs lose their luster quickly, especially if you are commuting more than 30 miles a day. Why anyone without 3 plus kids drives around in these things daily is beyond me quite frankly...they make no economic sense whatsoever, which is probably why people are abandoning them in such high numbers.

Living 30 miles away from work is almost as dumb as using an SUV as a daily commuter.

Good point. I think I'll sell my house in the suburbs and move to a condo downtown that is 1/10th as big and costs 3x as much. My kids will have a lot more fun growing up in the middle of downtown anyway.

I love how Amused somehow turned this into an issue of individual freedoms when amdskip merely said driving SUVs is illogical. Freedom is not freedom from criticism.

The point he was making is that "illogical" is relative. Sometimes an SUV/Truck is the only vehicle that fits a need and that makes the gas mileage a non-issue. Most around here are the masters of tunnel vision and think theirs is the only valid opinion. I would wager that most that think this way are also younger. Go the rare and special flower generation!!!

It's too bad there's no jobs outside the city!

We're keeping our 2003 Tundra V6 until it dies, which will be in a while, because it's a Toyota. ;) Seriously though, we bought a reliable truck for a reason.

But, people buying new SUV's/full-size trucks now are pretty stupid. Who's going to buy it off them when gas is $8/gal?

How about people that buy mid sized performance coupes and sedans that AT seems to fawn over that get just as poor or even worse fuel mileage and far less utility? Are they stupid, or do they just sound stupid like the bandwagon SUV bashers?

What? My friends have an IS350, 335i, TL-S, etc. They all get higher than 20 mpg combined. My truck has a V6, pushing 190 hp while their V6's/I6's are pushing ~300, and I get like 16-17 combined mpg (14-15 city). Weight is a big factor in fuel efficiency.

As far as utility, unless you need the off-road capabilities of an SUV (which 99.99999% of SUV owners don't), a minivan/station wagon will give you FAR more interior room. I was disgusted at a 2007's Tahoe's third row seat room. It's such a huge truck with such little room for its size. Our old minivan had much more utility. I'm sure we could have fit larger things in the trunk with our minivan.

Edit: had to add "I6" for the BMW...

Yeah, people and companies that use these vehicles for business to make money are pretty stupid. I should just sell my cargo van that gets around 10-12mpg and buy something like a Honda Civic to carry my equipment and supplies. I'll save so much money and time when I make 10 trips to the job site to haul equipment/supplies when I could've made one trip in my fuel inefficient van.

I missed the part where amdskip said it is illogical for ANYONE to drive an SUV.

Look at it this way - if he had said it was illogical for people to get 100% interest only ARMs on houses they can't really afford, would you argue with him over personal freedom? If he had said it was illogical for people to invest heavily in companies that had no intention of ever making a profit, would you argue with him over personal freedom? So when a person buys an SUV for the sole purpose of carting kids around when gas is $2/gallon, and then gas jumps to $3.50 a gallon and those people can't afford to drive anymore, I'd say they made a pretty illogical decision.

The 99.99999% point is laughable bullshit. Most people drive vehicles they don't "need", and only one passenger in my Sorento makes it as fuel efficient as a damn "smart"car, 2 extra makes it better than a Prius (which pass me 70+ on the freeway all the time (just the driver too), surely maximising their mileage advantage)

Weight is a big factor in fuel efficiency

So are driving habits, but lets pretend that every one drives to get the most out of their fuel economy. I'll even bet a good number of cars that "potentially" could get fully double my Sorento's fuel mileage, get no better at all simply because of the way the vehicle is driven

Similar Minivans also get ~ same fuel economy as my SUV. My SUV is better in every way for me and my uses, so at that point its not about fuel economy at all, just simple SUV bashing.

Agree with you 100%.

My Mazda6i hatchback is doing me just fine and has TONS of room. People are amazed at the trunk space. I'm remodeling my home and load tons of items in it. Sedans SUCK!

It's simple......... If you own a large truck, van or car that get's crap gas mileage and you complain about gas prices........... Eat it, buy a different vehicle or WALK! Stop WHINING!
(The little Sub Contractor is what is going to hurt though)

Hell, I might just buy an Escalade all tapped out on options to store in the garage for 20 years for fun  Ya' never know, collectors item $$$ :disgust::eek::frown::laugh:

OK, how about if you DON'T own a SUV, or large truck and yet you complain about someone elses decisions and the price of someone elses fuel..wtf does that make you then? Just curious.

Lol, you've been watching too many John Wayne movies, son. The founding fathers SO DISTRUSTED THE INDIVIDUAL that they didn't allow the President to be elected by them. They made them vote for ELECTORS, which in their mind were the ELITE and therefore better suited to make that choice.

And Senators were chosen by state legislators, NOT by the people.

You don't even know the actual history of your own country, son.

Actually, issues like that were much discussed back then. The founding fathers did not have unanimous opinions, including on what you mentioned. We tend to idolize and romanticize that era.

I just rent a truck@ home depot whenever I have something that can't be carried
in a car. $20 for the first 75 minutes. Why someone would buy a vehicle that even
greedy car dealers wont take in trade is baffling to me... I've also noticed large trucks
and SUV's driving ever slower and running W/ no AC on as their owners try to coax
mileage out of their lumbering beasts.. HAHAHAHAH, joke's on you shit for brains!..

That an engineer thinks the two options are suburbs and downtown is very depressing :(
