May 2000: i820 chipset and motherboard recalled due to the problem in the MTH(Memory Translator Hub)

June 25, 2004: 915/925 chipset and motherboard recalled due to the problem in the ICH6

Jan 31, 2011: All 6 series chipset recalled due to a problem in the SATA 3G's PLL circuitry

The first two wasn't a hit at all, even after the fix was implemented. i820 had the MTH which translated Rambus signals from the MCH to memory so SDRAM can be used. 915/925 wasn't popular because it brought LGA775 and PCI Express video card slot, both of which didn't bring improvements at the time.

Hmm, if I can pinpoint one possible "feature" that could make the 6 series chipset unpopular, that's having to choose between Overclocking + Discrete graphics vs. Quicksync and Integrated graphics.

It's possible the initial P67/H67 chipsets won't be popular either, and people will instead go for the Z68.

Well, I have quite a few parts laying around now, and my Asus Maximus IV Extreme was called back (while in shipping) by the distributor here in Germany. When I called to ask for an explanation I was told that they oversold the board - but with timing like this I'm rather skeptical.

As it stands now I have everything but the motherboard for my new build, and you mention z68 (a quick google search takes me here:

Has Intel said anything about the release date? I wonder if the Z68 release date will be delayed since Intel will be spending time and money to handle this board debacle.

I could buy one of the motherboards I mention from Overclockers but now that I'm in this 'waiting' stage I might want to avoid this whole RMA fiasco anyway. Do you have any more information on the upcoming chipset release?

Well z68 looks totally uninteresting (esp if the ssd/hdd feature is software). On the other hand LGA-2011 looks very interesting (Q4) 'cept it will cost an arm and a leg. I think I'll go with P67 over Z68 unless something unexpected occurs. If on the other hand I were to wait another full year (apr 2012) then I would at least evaluate LGA-2011 price point. At some point a machine is simply fast enough. If a P67 can run the slowest game without issues for the next 3 years I could care less how LGA-2011 performs. Even today I question if there is real value in upgrading from my E8400; but I will likely do it t so that I can have both computers for a while in case there are issues with my upgrade from xp to 7 (i.e, if I were not also upgrading to window 7 I would definitely wait a while longer to upgrade the hardware).

I had an Asus P3C2000 that took SDRAM and was based on i820. It was a POS with its silly memory limitations and crippled speed. HOWEVER that PC ran for years and was very stable.
