Trace an email

I know you can trace the origin of an email. Can you trace where an email goes to? Take those chain letters for example. Would it be possible to put code within the message, so every time a new person read it, you would know? Or would the code have to be an attachment that was actually executed?

I'm not looking to spam, more curiouosity than anything.

It could be an attatchment, possibly html email (evil!) that hits a website on the net which would atleast give you an ip address, maybe more information if the browser leaks information.

sounds like the makings of a network virus(worm) to me, scary. maybe you shouldn't ask that question in the AT forums.

Please. Why shouldn't I ask such a question? Is this not a tech forum? I didn't even realize my profile was off. I never looked into it.

I run my own website. I get spammed to hell and back due to bots, so once in awhile I wonder about this stuff, and I like to ask out of curiousity. That's why I signed up here. When I have a question, it's a great place to get answers. I'm sorry if you think I have malicious intent, but that isn't the case. I want to be informed.

And what's the problem with that? If something can be used improperly, I'm not allowed to understand it, or ask questions? I've been a member here for about six months. I didn't sign up on a whim with the intention of putting out a virus. I asked because I didn't know. Which is typically how it works. Give me a break.

Calm down. Many of the regulars in the Networking forum are grumpy (myself included). Many of us work our asses off setting up, maintaining, securing, and fixing networks and users. We arent paranoid, they reallly are out to get us.
