If hybrid crossfire is improved through mantle it could actually improve their discrete sales on the low end.

The APUs also eat away at Nvidia discrete. In fact most of Nvidia's volume is low end, GPUs that are destined to be completely replaced by an APU like device.

You called it a "problematic trend" for AMD, I'm saying Nvidia has more to worry about when it comes to the APU. We are talking about volume here, as per the the graphic you posted.

Actual unit/profit is more complicated and requires one to dig through financials to get a somewhat accurate assessment of how the profits break down.

If you see the graph NV's discreet shipment actually increased so APU didn't hurt them at all.

Its a failure on AMD's part to capture the mobile market for multiple generations already, ever since the 6000 series and all through the 7000 series, they had so few notebooks and ZERO (i could not find any after searching for a buy) ultrabook wins.

NV still have their 630M or 640M in pretty every mainstream notebook design that has discrete. Their 630/40M is also in quite a few ultrabooks.

This isn't even due to better efficiency on Kepler, because the 7790 calibre GPUs have ample efficiency, just no design wins. Too much bad rap from their horrible power management on notebooks and again, thats a failure of their management team to focus on the right approach.

Intel will keep on climbing up the GPU marketshare % as fewer people opt to buy AMD APU + AMD GPU combo notebooks.

No dude you are clueless.I created this thread to show APUs are eating AMD's market shares.NV did just fine, it is AMD who lost the discrete share.

1.NV's discrete share increased
2.AMD increased their APU sales
3.AMD's discreet share dropped.

I was trying to find a correlation between them in this thread but it seems some people takes things too seriously.

AMD's shipments of desktop heterogeneous GPU/CPUs, i.e. APUs, jumped 27.8% from Q2 but declined 21.3% in notebooks. AMD's discrete desktop shipments declined 3.1%, and notebook discrete shipments declined 4.5%. The company's overall PC graphics shipments decreased 4.5%

Discrete GPU loss in both segments. APU loss in mobile. And APU win(Unless on the expense of AM3+) in desktop. Since the CPU division tanks again.

Nvidia's desktop discrete shipments showed the most growth, up 8.2% from last quarter; however, the company's notebook discrete shipments decreased 3.3%. The company's overall PC graphics shipments increased 2.3%.

Discrete win in desktops. Discrete loss in mobile. Overall win. Combining nVidia+AMD from above, its clear that Intels IGP is destroying discrete GPUs in the mobile segment.

Discrete GPU shipments was flat. meaning discrete desktop GPUs sell more. Since discrete mobile GPUs sell less. PC gaming is more alive than ever.

Its extremely hard to find a laptop with hd7000m/8000m graphics, makes you think why... If you find any, it is 7670m or 7970m. Nothing in-between. HD7750 is such a good graphics card for the money, with incredible performance/W, yet you cant get it in laptop.

I guess new powertune that they introduced in r9 290(X) will make its way into mobile. It is very good at keeping the TDP budged dry, which is crucial for performance mobile devices.

That is where the Mantle comes in. If they make hybrid xfire (apu+dgpu) a viable option that yields reasonable performance, we may see very appealing options in mobile. 7660G+7670m (dual graphics) gives almost no improvement in fps over 7670m alone.
If mobile get 4core kaveri with 384GCN cores and is paired with budged dgpu like 7730 (384GCN), that gives theoretical performance around hd7770, which is plenty for low resolution gaming.

I think AMD will gain a minimum of 2-3% extra share the next quarter.Moreover people now aware that BF4 is optimized for AMD which will give them a huge boost.Moreover mantle can be a great extra for AMD going forward.

QTQ doesn't really mean as much as YTY. I think these are the two most important statements in the article:

Year-to-year this quarter AMD's overall PC shipments declined 8.5%, Intel dropped 2.7%, Nvidia declined 18.7%, and VIA fell 82.4% from last year.

Total discrete GPU (desktop and notebook) shipments were roughly flat from the last quarter (up 0.12%) and down 18.8% from last year for the same quarter due to the same problems plaguing the entire PC industry. Overall the trend for discrete GPUs is down with a CAGR from 2012 to 2016 of -5.7%.

I see two things going on here. First, the PC market is obviously contracting as people are meeting their computing needs with tablets, cellphones, etc. Also, the PC market is continuing to march towards SOC, with nvidia taking the biggest hit since they don't offer any SOC PC products. It seems Intel is keeping the most competitive and taking the smallest loss in shipments which makes sense given their lead in technology of the competition.

But yes, everybody saw this coming when Intel started integrating and then embedding GPUs into their CPUs. All those cheap AMD/NV discrete add-in cards on PC desktops and laptops started going away. AMD did the same, cannibalizing sales of cheap discrete GPUs, but better to do that than let Intel eat your lunch. NV got squeezed out of the low end as well but went looking elsewhere for revenue like HPC and mobile.
