Intel please please give us an Iris powered desktop part. I would be all over that :)
Higher IPC + better iGP = better performing parts.
The only question i have is power consumption, operating temperatures, lower, same or higher???

Iris Pro on a desktop i3 would make for a pretty nice gaming micro-PC.

No doubt man, i want to upgrade my HTPC (A8 3850) and haven't done it yet because my system owes nothing or little to what's available on the market. A10 6800 is not enough of a jump and Intel's HD 4000 sucks even more. Iris driven buy a robust core i5 would be perfect... If Intel won't offer than Kaveri it is.

Any word on Haswell NUCs with these i3's in them yet? Perhaps some pricing and features?

Don't they only put ULV parts in the NUC. It was true of Ivy Bridge NUC.

I'd imagine the ULV CPUs are also coming with the release of this part of the Haswell lineup, they just dont get the fanfare because they typically aren't sold retail.

They're BGA which makes buying them more complicated, but i'd imagine some AIOs and ultra small form factor boxes will have them. Not sure about the NUC, though.

It'd be kinda silly if Intel didn't update their own product line with their own new parts when Haswell is specifically all about meeting the needs of precisely the applications the NUC is used for. Especially considering there were some complaints of the Ivy NUCs running hot. :p

I'm itching to build an HTPC and one of these would be absolutely great.

I promised someone that I would build them a NUC. Here's hoping that the Haswell models of the NUC come out soon.

It puzzles me that Intel would not bring Iris Pro to the desktop line. It's almost like throwing AMD a lifeline by giving the A10 a continued raison de etre.

i5-4670R is a desktop CPU with Iris Pro.

It does not matter though because Iris Pro and A10 are not direct competitors. They are in diffrence price brackets. CPUs with Iris Pro are very expsensive chips.

I think Intel should at least sell some desktop dual cores with the HD 5000 ("Iris pro" without L4 cache), it's easier to have faster DDR3 with desktops anyway, and with a 65W TDP or something it would perform much better than it does on the macbook

i5-4670R is BGA. So where are the mobos with this CPU for sale?

I guess I should be more precise in my language. Desktop CPU to me means a CPU we can buy and use in our desktop PC. Available in some prebuilt crap doesn't really count in my book.

I'd assume that intel is under the impression that most desktop users who buy expensive CPUs will also couple them with discrete GPUs - the Iris Pro is fantastic for mobile form factors, but I can't see it having a place in a desktop aside from HTPC use. So for the desktop users we'll have to settle for HD4600, I suppose.

The 4770R is also an expensive chip. I don't feel left out at all by the fact that it is primarily sold for AIO/BGA use - it really is a better fit for those types of form factors. I also don't think a 400$ 4770R would sway those who purchase the sub 100$ AMD APUs, which is probably why intel didn't bother making an LGA version.

Any LGA1150 chip with Iris Pro graphics would be welcome for the mini-ITX build I'm planning for my better half. Anything less would result in a GPU downgrade, and while it might be a liveable compromise, I'm just averse to going backward.

Given the size of the 128MB eDRAM on 22nm ~84mm^2, how would you propose they did this?
I don't even see Broadwell desktops finding the space to contain this feature.
And anyway, It is not like an i3 Iris pro would be saving us anything in the way of cost vs performance over a separate GPU set up.

It's for SFF builds where discrete is not possible.

I would like to try a crazy build with a very, very tiny case and a 20mm fan or two using Haswell with a passive heatsink.

But I think the smallest boards are outside what I'd want to use :(

I want to go fanless. Too much dust in our country home. I love the thought of maintenance free computing, at least for the wife, who knows not of the magic of canned air.

True it seems Intel does not sell motherboards+i5-4670R combo by itself which sucks balls obviously, but unfortunatelly imho it how Intel will proceed in future with more and more products. I wonder when we'll see first 'Intel Centers' run by Intel itself selling it's end consumer products. 5 years?

There's a scary thought. At such time, I would think most enthusiast activity will be centered around tweaking retired server hardware; this is already beginning.

Seems like bare NUC boards are unobtainium, at least any one that I would want, like the D53427RK.

GT3e looks like this:

I think that should fit under an LGA1150 heatspreader just fine.
