How disappointing. I've been waiting to pull the trigger on a $400-$500 card and was hoping the 290 would fill that gap. A week delay + an indeterminate amount of time waiting on AIB solutions means I'll be picking up a 780 to satisfy my BF4 needs.

My personal needs aside, if they can bring this card in close to $400 I think it'll sell extremely well.
This whole debacle had me buying BF4+BF4 premium when I was planning just to buy the 290x that comes with BF4+BF4 premium for free.

Not initially they can't.
As long as they are making some profit off the individual product they are recouping R&D money.

Also, stuff they learned with Hawaii will be put to use come 20 nm and GCN 1.x or 2.0.

I assume that everyone reading this thread is aware that the "launched" R9 290X isn't actually available in stores..? It's not like a delay in lifting the NDA really means anything to consumers. AMD has been yanking our chain with the R9's for a month now with their 'hype launch'. I'll be a lot more interested when these cards actually exist.

I thought a few 290X's made it out to stores and were just sold out, waiting for restocks. Or is that not true?

Just a FUD post. They've been in stock and they have been selling out. It just depends which side you prefer. Your preference: sold out!. Not your preference: paper launch!

I saw Gigabyte cards in stock on Amazon yesterday being posted on hardforum, now sold out. I guess all these people who have their 290Xs already are all making it up too.

Stock 290 (non-x) vs Watercooled 7970 @ 1360/1860
Ops this is 3DMark, not 3Dmark11!

Titan went through similar discussions, I'd wait to see what AMD says in a few months otherwise you might look silly trying to say something wasn't selling out in quantity when it was.

Just look at the newegg reviews starting to stack up already and I see them in stock in the evenings and gone by morning.

It doesn't include BF4 premium, unless the store you buy it from specifically states that. So far, none in the US include it.

Newegg still hasn't even had the reference model without BF4......(Coming Soon it says).

Face it, it is as paper as it gets, and terrible timing for AMD too.

We are now in week 2 and the situation here in germany is still bad.

I guess the 290x is a halo product and the real Hawaii card is the 290 with a huge stock right from the start.

Amazon had stock in almost all day on Tuesday. I grabbed one in the morning and there was like 10 left before I went to bed.

I think they're really delaying to send a BIOS update to reviewers along with updating their cards at the plant to have a higher clock speed. They may also be still pondering pricing. I imagine that's a tough choice. How close to $400 can they go and still be profitable? $450? $400?

They planned on having a huge advantage with the R9 290 in between the 770 and 780, but now it's going to be right on the R9 290's bumper with a decent bundle. Plus, I wonder if they aren't about to dump the reference design altogether and just let the OEM's use their custom coolers out of the gate instead.

It really seems like nVidia may have pissed on their hushpuppies with that rather incredible (for nVidia) price drop. I don't think I've seen nVidia do anything as reactionary as that since the days of the 280 and 260 being way overpriced before AMD arrived with its "keep it small" design philosophy (that they then abandoned after two generations). I think that was the last time nVidia was compelled to drop prices by so much so rapidly.

Competition is grand.
AMD would have planned for one of NV's usual "rain on the parade" price slashes..just as they did when GTX260/80 got reamed by HD4850/70 and they had to drop the price nearly a $150 to compete.
And...as benchmarks are now showing, they have the superior card on top of the tree which also,in passing, dethroned NVDA's $1000 Titan.
Yes,competition is indeed grand.:)

Actually AMD already made a statement, they said the demand was higher than they expected.. there's a link somewhere in the big review thread, cbf to dig it up. But really, even if AMD said it, would you believe them? More propaganda, right?

Personally, I know for a fact many stores in Australia are sold out and long backlogs. Whats interesting is the EK R290X waterblock is also SOLD OUT. I am shocked, because I never thought THAT MANY people actually used water cooling...

Maybe the reason is here:

What we have learned since bringing you that news is that AMD will be releasing a grand total of 8,000 AMD Radeon R9 290X Battlefield 4 Edition cards. This means globally and not just regionally!
And most cards for sale is the BF4 edition. And the fact they keep coming back on sale shows they havent sold the 8000 yet.

Reminds me of the 680 launch. Hopefully it won't last as long before they have sustainable stock levels.
