To me, this sounds like a great way to generate revenue and get rid of those pesky and annoying ADS. I would allow it to run on my PC if it was only using about 20%-30% of my CPU because I want to support the site, but not have to be bombarded by annoying ADs. With today's CPU's I don't think it's too much to ask for a 20%-30% CPU utilization. That's about equivalent to running a flash-based App. I do support a pop up that asks whether you would allow the miner to execute though. I do have to wonder about smart device users though. My phone, An old beast Samsung Galaxy S4 only has a 900 MHz chip and it slows to a crawl while on Facebook and it updates. The damn thing seems t update every time I'm on Facebook too. Never mind trying to watch a video. I did see on groupon an S7 going for about $160. But I failed to take advantage of it.
This month, The Pirate Bay successfully propelled the idea of a Javascript-based cryptocurrency miner to a mainstream public. While many sites are now experimenting with the new revenue model, possible abuse has also drawn the attention of ad-blockers and anti-virus tools. Coinhive, the company behind the miner, hopes that it can reverse this trend.
