I'm sure the American guys are as good as japs..slightly less however, but the question is: why would they want to? Not until recently has Gm felt the need to upgrade their GMC/Chevy SUV line up with a 275Hp i6 engine. I mean GM just came out of no-where with that. You should also know by now, American Manufacturer's don't take the initiative, the competition brings out a new product, if their bread and butter is going to be undermined, Detroit fires back with their own. Ford/GM just take a longer time to initiate it; since it costs R&D resources and taking revenue from old/established products.

It's all about profit margins. They're not as good as the Japanese because they don't want to spend the money that's necessary to be. They just design what's adequete and bang em out. Toyota is smarter because they made less on each car - built them better and sold a ton of them. In the long run they ended up making more. Somebody said they have like 80 bil in cash lying around or something crazy like that.

About the I6 engine. Did you know that in order to fit the I6 under a sloping hood it was necessary to integrate the front differential into the engine oil pan? They haven't been out for that long so I can't speak for the reliability, but I'm scared. I can see some enormous repair bills.

Toyota is better because if japanese culture and work ethic. They, down to a person, accually take pride is thier companies success, take serious shame if they turn out a defect, don't pay CEO 10's of millions and don't watch the clock like american workers. It's a team mentality and a matter of national pride to be the best. americans are selfish.

a lot of americans wouldnt watch the clock either, if unions didnt force them to behave how they want them too.

Man when you hear a testimony like that....it's just sad to see the state of American car manufacturing.

Ya but I'll buy it because it keeps most dollars here, supports union workers many limited skill many minorities who now live middle class instead of walmart job. I've known for years Japanese build the best refined autos with most power per ltr and best economy fuel wise but one area they lack is plush comfort like cadillac and lincoln or abuse you can give an american drivetrain in trucks. Look at the axel housings sometimes on SUV'sand trucks it's 2x the diameter on american rides..

Thing is though - most of the imports are built here in the US anyway. So you're still employing Americans if you buy a Nissan.

Some are assembled here.. Not sure about all the componets...(but ford is moving this way too🙁)...theres a sticker on the car to tell though I saw F-350 is 86% USA.. But mainly they employ non-unoin assembles at low wages in the south.. 13-15 and hour not 25-35 and hour like detriot. n Hard to raise a family on these low wages and doe'nt cost me much to buy american...

um, ford alreday has a rice mobile, its called the focus.

and NFS4, um, thanks for puttin the billybob, and bubbadee in their,
bastard

its not just rednecks, ppl are loyal to brands because they had good experiences with them.

you do understand that japanese cars were once laughable too right?

the quality of trucks from detroit are VERY high, in fact i believe most of them compete with what most foreign cars can offer. so the truck market wont only be hard, it will be very near impossible to completely be accepted in. some people just dont see foreign = trucks. they see foreign = cars.

MIKE

The quality from Detroit isn't high - cars or trucks. They break too often.

There are two reasons why the Big Three owns the truck market.

1. The Billy Bob factor - can't be denied.

2. Like everything else in this country, bigger = better. People want a 1-Ton truck, Japan doesn't make any. They don't know how to.

When they learn how to, or if Toyota buys Ford and markets them under the Ford nameplate then things will change. They already know how to build cars more efficiently and reliably than we do - it's only a matter of time. It's the last market to dominate, you think they'll stop at cars?

Also, people are loyal to brands because they don't know any better. They think nothing of their cars being in the shop several times a year, because all their cars have been that way, and that's just the cost of owning a car.

Just to fan the flames:

"In the last 20 years, trucks and SUVs have changed dramatically in the way they are used, from rough-hewn utility vehicles to mainstream passenger vehicles. That may help explain why the reliability improvements are more pronounced than among cars. Japanese-made trucks, only a tiny part of the market 20 years ago, improved from 41 problems (per 100 vehicles) in 1980 to 16 in 2000. The U.S.-nameplate trucks improved from 102 to 23.

"Ford's improvement has been the most dramatic. In 1980, new Ford pickups were the most troublesome. By 2000, Ford had improved 86 percent and ranked second behind Toyota: 16 problems vs. Toyota's 13. The Ford F-150, in fact, went from being one of the most unreliable of all vehicles in 1980 to being the most reliable Ford product in 2000. GM's overall trouble rate dropped from 107 to 26, and Chrysler's from 40 to 26."

CR......last month's issue.
