Toyota to buy Ford? Stupid rumor?

Being at a somewhat large securities firm, sometimes I heard some interesting rumors...

some true (like, First union buying our firm Wheat First Butcher Singer the day before, or that the merger of Wachoiva & First Union)

some false (like Wachovia merging with Lynch... but we end up buying Prudential Sec.)

There a rumor right now circulating the trading area that Toyota may buy Ford due to their low stock value. Personally, I don't think that would happen. What do you guys think?

it would be the best thing to ever happen to ford, but i'm not sure why toyota would bother, other than to grab the truck market.

Uhhh, I think hell would freeze over before that would be allowed to happen.

why? mercedes was allowed to buy out chrysler.

That's different. The Ford family still owns a large stake in the company. They would demand to own the same stake in the merged company if Toyota and Ford were to combine.

Because Ford is as synonymous to USA as baseball and apple pie. A large group of people from investors to possibly even the federal government would step up to the plate and help out in any way they could to prevent it from happening.

Last year Toyota's profits were more than all three major US mfg's combined. Think about how plausible this is (financially).

It doesn't mean the shareholders will sell out. Didn't Oracle try to buy somebody recently? It wasn't that Oracle didn't have the money, the board members decided they didn't want to sell.

I looked up the market capitilization of the two companies:
Ford (symbol F): US$21 Billion
Toyota (symbol TM): US$108 Billion

So it appears that the stock market values Toyota 5 times higher than Ford. I don't know if that means what it seems it means.

edit: edited numbers to reflect reality 😱

Not to mention the cost to restructure ford would cost billions.

I was wondering how Mercedes manged to get Chrysler before.

A lot of people would be disgusted if their beloved Mustang is "riced".

I just checked and TM was at around $105 billion.

Still it's financially plausibe to say the least.

Daimler Chrysler, ok it kind of works together, but Toyota Ford?!? They just don't go well together.
From what I hear though Toyota has the money to do it, and Toyota could definitley use some people who know how to style a car. 😛

A couple of month ago, while listening to NPR, I heard a guy speculate that Ford is a prime candidate to be taken over by a company like Toyota, a company with Millions in cash in the bank. They quickly cut to commercial right after he said that and the interview was over. Made me think

I don't think Ford has anything to offer to Toyota. After seeing what Chrysler did to Daimler-Benz, the big head and the Toyoda family will probably think twice. They already have a great market in the US and somewhat of a loose alliance with GM. Unless they're just buying Ford for their factories and dealer network(?), but Toyota hates unionized worker/UAW, so I don't see thats as a possibility.

Hell no, it won't happen.

TOYOTA HATES UNIONS!!!

So does Honda... I guess Japanese don't like them at all. I know at one Honda parts factory they put their workers through odd "Swing Shifts" Where they bounce every two - four weeks from one shift to another. What is the point in doing that to their workers??? They are starting to talk to Unions about what is going on.
