Environmentalists say a car combining clean diesel technology with electric motors could achieve carbon dioxide emission reductions that would make them cleaner than Toyota's iconic petrol hybrid Prius.

But doing so would push up costs far beyond what consumers would bear, according to Toyota Motor Europe chief executive Tadashi Arashima.

"Already the diesel [price] premium is quite high, then you'd have to pay a hybrid premium, so we're not seeing that there's a market," Mr Arashima told BBC News.

I'm not really surprised, but then again, I don't really support hybrids that much.

aren't diesel engines more expensive? Aren't they much much heavier due to the stresses involved, and they have to reinforce it to stabilize it and make the emissions clean? PLUS the costs of R&D'ing, implementation, marketting, etc to make such an engine/car....

costs too much, and I don't think it's a good decision to make one due to the cost.. no?

if anyone knows about cost management, its Toyota
If they think hybrid diesels are an unwise choice at the time, then they're probably right

I want a 4.0 liter turbo diesel hybrid in a pickup. Someone come out with one and I'll sell my truck.

You don't even need the extra hybrid components, a small diesel is good enough for a commuter and very fuel efficient, and durable.
