How many times is my Pontiac vibe going to have a recall in it's life cycle? Jeez.

For those who don't know. Pontiac Vibe = Toyota Matrix = best of both recall worlds.

I'm in the same boat. My poor 2009 Vibe keeps getting recalls.

Tempted to sell it at this point but really don't want another car payment (and the wife and I can't agree on what to get - I want a big SUV that carries 7+ and she wants a small to midsize that carries 5).

All cars have problems, I rather have a recall then have to pay to fix it myself. That and if its paid for and runs well take care of it and keep going. We pay cash for our cars so having a car payment would be awful IMO.

The GM, Toyota, etc... recalls would not stop me from buying a car from them.

Well, it gets annoying when your car runs just fine and you have to bring it in for the recall, then they try and upsell you new brakes, oil change, coolant flush etc. Mine has 171k miles on it and the dealership tries to find something wrong with it.

2 years ago I brought my Jetta in for an Airbag recall. (Car was not experiencing the airbag light symptom due to a bad wiring harness) 11 months later, airbag light intermittently comes on. I take it to the dealer and they told me the igniter is bad. $600. I told them no and they charge me a diagnostic fee of $95. I took the car home ripped the seat out and rewired it myself. No more airbag light. This is why I hate recalls.

Mine only has 54k on it. Have a Focus as well and 2 compact hatchbacks are nice, but there have been many a time we have needed more cargo space and suffered as a result.

Lol at thread title. Tis the season of the recall. I wonder if this will increase new car sales? Owners get tired of bringing in their "dangerous" car, start looking at the shiny metal, get into a conversation with a sales rep, and POOF old and busted is gone and the fresh hottness is in the driveway. Along with their 60 month payment plan.

I can only remember two recalls on my 2001 Tundra, which were the O2 sensor made by non-Toyota and the rust issue, which I have not seen any evidence of yet.

OTOH, my 2013 BMW 335 had a recall for the satnav maps update which took four hours. Nothing like spending half a day waiting around. They did give me a loaner, but after two days they hadn't started the maps update and only did so when I forced-returned the loaner to wait.

The Vibe was out in '03. They were building them in '02. Why would the recall only go back to '04?

Seems weird that they would randomly introduce a problem in the second year on an unchanged car. Must have been an early change in parts vendors or something.

Get a few deaths on the NEWS that relate to recalls (or stuff that should be recalled) the car companies run scared.. They have no fear of fines, but damage to brand image in a world where hardly anybody know the whole story is hard to combat. Problem is (and please, Death is no thing to trivialize, this in no way means i am) most highly publicized recalls are lynch mobs.. Take a look at the past and couple recalls that are famous.. almost all have now over time been labeled as witch hunts. Corvair- made ralph nader famous, killed the Corvair, which has over time been labeled (again) as ahead of its time. The Pinto, while no great car, was not the Exploding mess it was made out to be, in fact there where almost NO actual real world incidents, most where in controlled test environments. We all do know (dont we) gas doesn't explode like in the movies, it can catch fire with sparks and fire.. but quit often a spark wont even catch it, the FUMES are far more flammable then the gas. No more pinto (can be argued no real loss, but it did make the Mustang a ecno box in the after math as ford had to have an economy car and needed a trusted name.. hence the Mustang II), The rolling Ford SVU lawsuits.. underinflated tires (sorry that is maintenance problem, not a car one) which all but killed Firestone. In the end it was not a tire problem, but didn't stop the public from doing what they do best, reading the headlines and ASSUMING one thing when it was another. Pontiac Fiero was supposed to catch fire, again.. less then 5 real world reports.. all with cars that had owners who did not MAINTAIN the cars..

when your car has an issue you need to deal with it.. loose/sloppy key.. why worry about that? its still starting.. well what does a key do, its an ANTI THEFT device that starts and STOPS/LOCKS the car.. if its not working correct, its going to .. (can we guess?) start or Stop/lock the car.. who doenst see this as a safty issue when driving?

it has an oil leak, just keep driving it.. then when and if it catch fire.. its not your fault. Tires are low, just keep driving it, not your problems if they sqwat in a corner and you roll..

owning a car is alot more then jut paying for it and adding gas.

Of course there are many legit recalls. its just some of the biggest most publicized are blown out of proportion, and that will scare any company because the public will not read the whole story, only that first headline "car is deathtrap, company admits if you drive 80 MPH in a 30 corner it will roll, has know since day one but didn't recall"

That reminds me of a girl that use to get her car serviced at my shop. She got a new car and dropped a friend off one day to pick her car up. I asked about her car and long story short she said it does not need oil changes as the first tune up is not till 100k. She had about 12k on the car by then.

I had to read the owners manual to her. The oil out of it was nasty thick and black. She was still driving it when I closed my shop and left town but I always use her as the "it only needs gas and tires for 100k..." person.
