Toyota is stopping sales on 8 models...

The fact that they manned up and halted production until a resolution is found means they are higher on my list of potential new car. It says a lot about the folks running the company to not ignore this safety issue and forsake profits for the safety of consumers.

GM and Chrysler would have continued to sell the cars until someone else found out about the flaw after driving into a wall.

You do realize this has been going on for awhile now? They actually have recalled cars in the past for this. 16 fatalities and 243 injuries from Toyota and Lexus crashes attributed to runaway vehicles.

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/11/09/class-action-suit-filed-against-toyota-over-sudden-acceleration/

A class action lawsuit has already been filed over this. Over 2,000 complaints of sudden unintended acceleration in these vehicles, culled from litigation and consumer-reported complaints to the automaker and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Dates back to cars from 2004. THAT says a lot about Toyota. It would appear that Toyota was aware of this issue and it's been dragging on for awhile one. One of the original recalls was in 2007 - THREE years ago.

In its first public comment since the recall, CTS said Tuesday that of 1.4 million pedals surveyed, only eight had the sticking-throttle problem.
pretty drastic move, but I guess when people's lives are potentially at stake...

This is an engineer's worst nightmare.

8 errors out of 1400000 is a nightmare? Six sigma would be a failure rate of 0.00034%. This is 0.00057% That is roughly the failure rate of the catapult system on an aircraft carrier, where a fault means a plane in the drink.

Gawd, I love it when you talk dirty.

Kinda' glad to see this didn't get slammed into the garage forum for one big reason........

THIS IS HUUUUUUGE!!!!!!!!!!

I was just reading a couple days ago about a guy who was able to get his Camry to rev uncontrollably and took it into the dealer like that which was KEY to exposing this serious problem. Had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with a floor mat, gas pedal or anything of the sort. (Did I mention I HATE THROTTLE BY WIRE???) This is one of the cases that I'm sure REEEALLY had Toyota thinkin' it might be time to pull the plug on this crap.

FF to this morning and my RSS feed dropped this headline into my inbox and I just about FLIPPED!! Remember this folks.........this thing is going to go down similarly to the old Pinto gas tanks, or Corvairs flipping thru the air, Samurais rolling over.....forget all those...........mark THIS!!

2010, the year that Toyota ROYALLY FUBARRED BEYOND ALL FUBARRING IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY IN A LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG TIME!!!!!!!!

Did I mention this is HUGE???

you realize that dudes korean right?

There are currently 3 SEPERATE issues involved in Toyota's current shit hole they are in.

Bad bushings on the throttle, causes it to stick open

The floormat issue

and

The fact that their ECU does not have an override to slow the engine rpm down when the brakes are applied.

I dunno, i never really liked toyota before but the gf bought a 09 Matrix last year and it is one hell of a good car. The only thing i really hate about it is the electric steering, it has no road feel feedback, not a issue for her cause she doesnt speed or push it hard, kinda sucks when you start sliding it around corners though and cant feel anyhitng through the wheel about how the tires are gripping or sliding. And its still not nearly as much fun to throw around tight turns as my CRX.

Paleeze. Cars hit other cars. I'm sure a semi has a crash test rating of 1 or F, I know which I'd rather be in vs. that four wheeled motorcycle. It's physics brudda not CTR.

Then again, want to get rid of wife... Tiger should get versa for her instead of escaldes.🙂

Should have got her a Ferrari. They're so low down that any collision with a truck or hummer means decapitation 😉

16 people have died, that we know of, and MANY others have had their cars take off that have not been counted.

Toyota is good about covering stuff up liek this. But this one is getting bad.

1 error out of any number is too many when it comes to safety systems.

"The sticking-throttle problem involves only vehicles using accelerator-pedal assemblies from CTS, a component supplier, Toyota says."

The folks over at CTS are going to have a world of hell to pay, good luck for them getting new contracts.

I wouldn't be so quick to point the finger at CTS. Remember, Toyota speced the part to put in. As long as the part is in spec as specified, CTS is not really liable.

Yep Toyota tried blaming someone else when the Tacoma trucks frames rusted. Then years later the Tundra has started the same problem.

3rd party suppliers make parts to meet the specs of the car maker. If they don;t meet them then the car maker sends them back.
