The Corolla is blah (duh), but the Matrix is downright nasty!

This is the point at which everyone says, "What did they do with that extra year?" Referring, of course, to Toyota's 2006 decision to push the Corolla launch back in order to freshen the design as a response to Honda's Civic.

The Corolla gets a makeover in the style of the Camry, with wedge-shaped headlamps and a Toyota logo in the grille-work. The new car is over two inches wider and an inch shorter than the 2008 model, in response to criticism that the old car always looked like it sat high on its axles. The interior has been given more attention, with a simple design but high grade materials and improved fit and finish.

Most Corolla trim levels will have a reworked version of the 1.8L four that now has Toyota's VVT-i variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust cams, which operate independently of each other. Its 132-horsepower output is up only two from the previous Corolla, but with a flatter torque curve. The performance XRS model loses its old 1.8-liter Celica GT-S drivetrain in favor of the 158-horsepower 2.4-liter four already used in a variety of Toyota and Scion models.

The Leno-chinned Matrix is half an inch longer and half an inch shorter than the model it replaces. The large rear quarter windows, one of the traits that distinguished the Matrix from its Pontiac Vibe twin, are gone in favor of small glass slits that form a wraparound backlite with the tailgate. The interior is very much an evolution of the current Matrix, with the most notable change being a square cluster-within-the-cluster for the fuel and temperature gauges.

Performance-wise, Matrix parallels the Corolla, with both 1.8 and 2.4-liter models available. AWD remains available on automatic 2.4-liter models. As with the Corolla, the highline XRS model has lost its high-revving 1.8-liter VVTL-i engine and six-speed manual in favor of a torquier 2.4-liter with a five-speed.

The front end of the Matrix looks like it wants to eat children. The Corlla is a definite improvement, although the rear/trunk styling is still not aggressive enough.

It does look pretty evil... but not in a good way. Why does Toyota have to make everything look like the Camry?? It's the weird melted plastic shape.
I was hoping that the Matrix/Vibe redesign would've been better. I don't understand that elevated shifter concept at all. And they did pretty much nothing to the engine with an increase of 6 HP.
They also dropped the XRS (Celica) engine... no six-speed manual :(

I'll stick with mine.. that's how toyota should have done it!

Overall, it's not terrible.. but they could have done better

The interior does look better than the Civic's at least, that's not saying much though.

Looks fine as a basic transport.

no significant increase in power, mileage, and mostly still 4 speed autos.

Corolla is what you'd expect from a Corolla hohum and unoffensive. Should sell similar to current model, which is pretty well. Of course if it was any other brand than Toyota, it would be a flop. But Toyota gets away with this kind of mediocrity.
Mattress is well, fugly, and boring. Kinda like the current one. I still don't see why anyone would buy either over a Mazda3.

Pretty much what the spy photos were suggesting.

So sad.

Them ground effects have GOT to go!

I just spent 15 minutes trying to find a ground effects kit as RIDICULOUS as the ones on the Toyota S's and XRS's and..........well..........I couldn't find one!

THAT'S how ridiculous those things look!

Ummm....looks like a minor refresh.....in the exterior atleast. I guess that have stalled from a design standpoint.

I'm looking for something with AWD, but yeah, this new Matrix is just really ugly. I wonder if the supposed upcoming V6 AWD 2009 Vibe is something I should look at. But it would have to go on sale sooner than later. My lease is up soon.
