Toyota 4Runner knows its a ute: Truck-based midsize is quick and powerful

It's as quick and powerful as it looks, with the Toyota Sequoia's terrific 4.7-liter V8 that produces 235 horsepower and a prodigious 320 pound-feet of torque. (A less-expensive 4.0-liter V6 version arrives in January, with 245 horsepower and 282 pound-feet of twist).

my '93 4Runner chugs along with its 3.0 liter V6 with 150 HP 🙁

I really like the fact that it has a nice honkin' V-8 as a standard engine.

Thumbs down on Daytime Running Lights as an option, just make it standard or dont.
Another thumbs down on the rear spoiler

damn you're such a Toyota fanboy. 😀

When it comes to trucks, gimme a Chevy or GMC any day. 😛

And clearly the only reason they make such a big deal of the "it's actually a truck, gol-durn it!" aspect of the 4Runner is that it's a Toyota.

In a world of mongrel minivans and sport-ute poseurs, the Toyota 4Runner's old-school approach is refreshing.

Mmm-hmm, and the top selling SUVs in the USA would be.... the truck-based Explorer, the truck-based TrailBlazer, the truck-based Grand Cherokee, and the truck-based Tahoe. Really sounds like "a world of mongrel minivans and sport-ute poseurs" to me. "A world of Japanese sport-ute poseurs" would be more apt. Yes I know Ford has the Escape.

BTW I hate Ford and I drive a Celica, so I'm not trying to diss Japanese cars... just Japanese minivans, oops I mean SUVs 😛

Close, but not quite condescending enough.

I'm waiting for someone to say "Damn, only 235hp out of 4.7 liters? What a peice of trash" like they always do about 265 out of the mustang's 4.6.

Dammit, I knew that I was gonna take sh|t for that 😀

and my answer is: if it's not derived from a car platform, and the only use for that platform is in a truck, then it's a truck platform, body-on-frame be damned.

but this is a truck, not a sports car. And the 4Runner's V-8 does have a very respectable 320 lb-ft of torque.

What difference does it make if it's a truck or a car? The mustang makes jsut over 300ft/lbs, btw.

Amen. It's the engine we're talking about, not the car/truck it's in. I find it laughable the V6 puts out more HP (albeit less torque) than their V8

Yeeeah, what's the deal? I get that out of my 3.0l toyota! At a whopping 249 lbs/ft too.

😉

The 235-hp figure is generally comparable to other vehicles in its class.

Ford Explorer
4.0L V6 - 210 hp, 254 lb-ft
4.6L V8 - 239 hp, 282 lb-ft

Chevy TrailBlazer/GMC Envoy
4.2L I6 - 275 hp, 275 lb-ft
5.3L V8 - 290 hp, 325 lb-ft

Jeep Grand Cherokee
4.0L I6 - 195 hp, 230 lb-ft
4.7L V8 - 235 hp, 294 lb-ft
4.7L V8 - 265 hp, 325 lb-ft

Dodge Durango
4.7L V8 - 235 hp, 295 lb-ft
5.9L V8 - 245 hp, 335 lb-ft

Mitsubishi Montero Sport
3.0L V6 - 165 hp, 186 lb-ft
3.5L V6 - 197 hp, 223 lb-ft

Nissan Pathfinder
3.5L V6 - 240 hp, 265 lb-ft

I don't know what to say, really.... I guess that the SUV market isn't plagued by high-tech high-revving/turbocharged/cam-enhanced/trick engines that get 100 hp per liter like the sports car market is. Therefore large-displacement SUV engines don't take the sh|t that large-displacement Mustang/Camaro/Firebird engines take.

HP really doesn't mean jack SQUAT in trucks/SUVs. It's all about torque. The base V6 engine puts out ten more HP but is down 38 lb-ft on torque. You talk HP when you're talking about cars. Don't make me get LAUST in here 😛

If that's the case, you could call the Escape's platform a "truck" platform. It only shares it's structure with the Tribute.

hmmmm..... I plead the 5th 🙂

but I think I could make the case that a vehicle that isn't natively RWD also shouldn't really be called a truck either. Ah well, the lines are blurred, but I think my point still stands. Just drop the Grand Cherokee from the list.

Didn't think they would be putting the 8 in the Runner pretty cool, lookin at the pictures they cleaned up the sheetmetal covers that were all over the 4.7.

Wish they would take that big cover off the V6 in their demo picture, would be interesting to see how they cleaned it up with the distributerless.
