Toyota 4 cyl?

Does the 4 cyl in the 06+ Camrys often have problems? Seems like it was mentioned here before. My parents are looking to buy one. Cheapo dad wants to buy the 4 cyl. since the V6's are 'expensive'.

dunno, buy my 4cyl 1996 camry has no probs at all, whatsoever and is pretty zippy too

AFAIK, the Scion tC uses the same 4 cy engine found on the Camry. I've been driving the 06 tC for about a year and haven't had any problems yet.

The Camry has a 2.4-liter with VVT-i now.

Well I could have sworn people said it had problems, but maybe not. I was hoping he'd step up to a V6. He was set on an Impala, but at least I think I've convinced him to get a Camry. Though he's thinking used '06's w/ 30K plus miles, but I'm shooting for an '07.
I also tried to push the Accord but he says all the ones he's looked at (used) have been too expensive. I don't think used Accords are really much more than comparable Camrys. I know new prices aren't really different.

why are you pushing so hard to spend your father's money?

accord's aren't much more money than a camry, but then they aren't much more car (if any) than a camry either.

The major problem with the motor is that it's loaded with slow. Very hard to fix.

accord's aren't much more money than a camry, but then they aren't much more car (if any) than a camry either.

I have good reasons. Don't worry about it.

At roughly 160 hp / 160 ft-lbs., I wouldn't call the 2AZ-FE slow for an NA 2.4L I-4 That's right in line with its competition. It's a well-built, extremely reliable engine.

It's a freaking camry and it's for your parents. The 4 cylinder engine is just fine. My parents have one and there are no problems with it at all.

Grade F hamster. Needs a lighter weight flywheel connected to the exercise wheel.

I'd go for an Accord I-4 personally. EPA rated 26MPG city, 34 MPG highway. Most people easily break those ratings. Also Accord's generally sell for a pretty good deal new IMO. Although you just missed 06 closeout, you could see if there are any more left.

You forgot to mention price range...

EDIT IMO buying a used Honda/Toyota is a waste. They have good resale which makes the used cars a worse value and dealer's tend to overcharge on the used cars. They wanted more money for a used 05 Accord than a new 06 was going for....how f'ed up was that

I personally wouldn't go to a Camry board and ask how they hold up. Seems like you'd get a biased answer.....but maybe that's just me.

Toyota's in general are built like tanks IMO. Everyone I know who owns one, never has a single problem whatsoever.

no, but you go to the car board to see what type of problems people are seeing.

Until they hit something I saw a toyota vs a buick accident a few weeks ago and the toyota was caved in (still driveable though) and the buick was only scratched up and dinged a little. They hit front passenger to front driver corners, like this:

It really didn't sound that bad when I said it. My apologies because it came out worse than I meant it to.

My point was, IMO, I just don't even see the reason to get a 6 cylinder in a Camry. In addition, it's your parents car, and if they want the 4 cylinder let them have it. The 4 cylinder version is more than capable performing in the ways your parents probably require it to.

plus, changing the spark plugs on a 4 is much easier
