Tourists deaths at Dominican Republic

Why no talk of this?

Tenth person has died.
https://www-m.cnn.com/2019/06/23/wo...an-republic/index.html?r=https://www.cnn.com/

I saw yesterday several hotels have removed alcohol from the mini bars. Apparently several have become sick immediately after having a drink.
Also other have said there was a chemical smell in their rooms.

Not sure where this is going, is some pest company using something way too strong and way too concentrated to kill bedbugs or is it some kind of knock off alcohol that’s basically moonshine or some maniac poisoning people.

Not sure what’s going on but here’s the thread for it.

Yeah this is very strange and also surprised that there isn't a thread on this yet. DR is right there near Cuba, Haiti of course and also PR.

This is a very similar mystery and seeming targeted killings/attacks like what has been happening in Cuba to Americans with the weird sonic attacks (this is apparently still happening, IIRC).

I get the feeling that these are all some related, organized, attacks from either a sophisticated terror network, perhaps even an aggressor nation's intelligence agency with as-yet-unknown technology (or at least outside groups with access to such via proxy--you know, ISI?). I only bring up Puerto Rico because I hate to think there are some very disgruntled people down there doing something like this as a response to Trump's utter callousness regarding his racist treatment of their nation and disaster relief.

The common thread seems to be "they drank something."

I just don’t know what to think, apparently the number dying isn’t too far off from historical numbers but the consistent heart attack is off. Also past numbers aren’t concentrated in the resorts.
Part of me says it’s the resorts going cheap on something like pest control and using a chemical too liberally or too aggressively or the hotel buying counterfeit booze from a dude brewing moonshine?
Are the poisonings from some date rape drug that was targeted to the wrong person?
Then another part of me says this is simply too weird for it not to be targeted.

well from what I currently understand, this is only US citizens that are effected (like in Cuba), unless that is a bias in the reporting that we see? Just, elimination of the other information. I haven't yet seen that other nations' citizens have been effected--granted, the majority of tourists to the DR are very likely to be US citizens any way.

I think the “counterfeit booze distributed through organized crime” seems most likely if autopsies find toxins. I do think there might be a bias in the reporting as “only Americans” being affected—deaths seem random enough and not statistically significant (1,000s of Americans arriving every weekend). Didn’t I read somewhere that some of those who died had other underlying medical issues (heart conditions?) Were they imbibing any other controlled substances?

Seems to be mainly affecting the Punta Cana area , only been there once. I end up spending a couple weeks in the DR every year but skip the resorts.

My buddy was just in punta cana a few months ago. He got offered some crazy drink at a resort that was supposed to be something special. Him and his step brother drank it all. When the waiter came back they told him they drank it all, he goes no that was for the whole table not just you two you guys are going to be in trouble. So apparently they both blacked out and did all kinds of crazy stuff, my buddy ended up in a hot tub with his clothes on with his phone and wallet still in his pockets and they found his step brother passed out on maintenance golf cart at 4am.

His step brother was freaking out about where his shoes ended up because it was the only pair he brought. A few days later some dudes like hey you want your shoes back and hes like what you know where my shoes are? The guy goes yeah you told me you'd give them to me if I told you how to get back to your room. The guy goes I told you I don't know where your room is and I don't want your shoes but you left them for me anyway.

Those are some crucial clues right there. It's centering on drinks and maybe illicit drug use.

I was going to say, I'm not sure that a bunch of Americans dying of heart attacks is actually that shocking.

You've been spending too much time around the nutjobs/conservatives on here.

You have to wonder if this isn't some isolated act of terrorism against Americans.
Someone with access to rooms and out to take revenge on American tourist.
Usually terrorist attack groups of people to create the most damage, but this could be terrorism on a much smaller scale.
I mean, who knows?

Too busy talking about all the Americans shooting each other here at home.

How strong of a chemical would you have to be using to kill people in a week of indirect contact? I doubt that is going to be the cause. Anyway, if you are ignoring the rules you use DDT to kill bedbugs (and just about everything else), and it is not going to cause heart attacks.

or is it some kind of knock off alcohol that’s basically moonshine

More possible, but damn how stupid do you have to be to make alcohol that toxic? Really, you have to try to screw up moonshine enough to cause cardiac arrest. If there was a rash of people going blind or having liver problems or kidney failure I would suggest that they were cutting corners in the booze, but cardiac problems? I find it unlikely.

or some maniac poisoning people.

This seems to be the most likely scenario to me. They have a serial killer targeting a specific type of person.

10 Americans have died in The Dominican Republic over the past year. Roughly 2.7 million American visit the Dominican Republic every year.

The latest guy, heart failure after years of heart problems.

"Vittorio Caruso, the most recent American to die in the Dominican Republic, died from respiratory and heart failure after a long history of related-health problems, the country's Attorney General's office said, citing a preliminary autopsy report.

Caruso had suffered from hypertension, heart disease and pulmonary disease for a long time, the office said."

...

"Caruso had been battling hypertension for nine years, and had a long history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the attorney general's office said.

New and previous heart attacks were detected by the autopsy, the office said. Caruso was a smoker and drank alcohol, per the autopsy results."

There was at least one case of a young couple dieing. Two young people dieing of a heart attack within hours of each other would be extremely rare.

always possible! 😀 But I did allow for potential bias in reporting (only American deaths reported over here) and of course the fact that the majority of tourists are probably American, so some general sampling bias. (2nd post)

but the personal report up there about special gonzo DR hooch at the hotels leading to black out episodes is fairly interesting--pair that with individuals that already have health issues and you have some trouble.
