tough situation about job offer

Lifer
This is really bothering me and I just don't know what to do.

As some of you know, I got laid off on 1/2/09 and I am looking for another job.

I had an interview for what seems like it would be a really nice job doing stuff similar to what I was doing before. It's a huge boost in pay from my previous job, about $12k more.
I am still waiting on their decision. I found out today that they haven't made a decision yet but I am still in the running for the position. The recruiter said that she would call them and see if she could get any more info from them or at leats find out when they plan to decide.

I had an interview yesterday for a job that I really do not want. It's basic phone support in a cubicle farm that they could probably train a monkey to do and it's a 6 month contract-to-hire position. The pay is $1.50 less per hour than I was making at my last job. It's also a 2nd shift schedule, which I do not like at all, and i won't have any benefits like health insurance for 6 months. I just basically dread doing this type of work again. I absolutely do not want this job. This company has made their decision and offered me a position (although it seems like they would offer this position to anyone off the street, imo).

Both are through recruiting agencies. I originally told the recruiter for the 2nd job that I didn't want the position but then she called me back and said she could probably get them to wait until Friday for me to make my decision since I'm waiting on this other company to make a decision.

Even if I don't get offered the 1st job, I still wouldn't want to do the 2nd job and I would continue to look for a better job. But, would I be stupid not to take it, given my situation and the economy? I could still take it and look for something else but then I'd be burning bridges at the company and causing problems for the recruiter.
I have no other job prospects at this time either.

If I don't get the 1st job or they don't make their decision by Friday, what should I do?

I guess I need you all to give me some input to help me make the decision. Have you been in this situation before? What did you do?

I say keep looking but take anything you can get because you don't know how long it may be until the next job offer. Look out for yourself and don't worry about leaving if you get a better offer.

Take the shitty job and keep looking. When you do find a replacement for the shitty job, try your damndest to ensure a 2-week notice to your recruiter that you're leaving, which means that hopefully your new employer will allow you two weeks. Tell the recruiter the job isn't for you. No bridges burned.

if you do not enjoy what you're doing, don't take the 2nd job. money isn't everything .... unless you're really really tight.

its always better to look for other work while having a paycheck coming in.

This. Unless you have plenty of cash you can live on, take the job.

period

This is easy:

take shitty job. If good job wants you later, then tell shitty job you decline. Who cares if you burn bridges with a shitty company? Who cares if this looks bad for the recruiters?

You have no room to maintain relationships with such companies in an economy like this. In fact, they shouldn't think less of you for accepting, then quitting within a week. They should expect it with the shit going on out there.

I said take the shitter and continue looking, but we need more details.

How much in the shit are you?

The job you don't want will probably never hire you permanent, especially now. They will likely keep renewing your contract until you leave or they fire you.

The job you do want is likely stalling. It is possible that whoever you're speaking to is a pussy and just doesn't have the balls to tell you that they don't want you. Having it be through a recruitment agency only makes it sound worse.

Try to stall as late as you can, but get ready to walk through door number 2.

Edit: Too many 'absolute' statements.

what do you mean, my personal finances? I'm not too bad but I'm not great either. i could probably go a few more months before it starts to hurt.

Take the job. The company gets what it pays for, if it wanted you to stay it would pay you better. I will (hopefully) run into the same situation soon since I'm hearing back from a lot of low paying work that really should pay better but I think they're trying to take advantage of the climate.

Wait until the end of the week. If you haven't heard back on the good job, take the shitty job instead. Take down a paycheck and keep looking. The crappy job isn't a career, and they know it.

i say get the low paying job and just be up front with them.

I had a few jobs back in the day and during the interview I said "To be honest, I will be here for probably x amount of time, and I really just need a good steady job like this to keep me over for that period. But if this turns out to be something really nice, I'm sure things can change later on"

That's actually exactly what I was asking.

I forgot to add that it might only get harder from here. Layoffs seem to only be increasing, and that's just extra competition.

I would take the shit job and keep looking.

To me, if I had someone apply to a position in two years and they had to job jump through 2009 it wouldn't bother me in the least. In 2003, yeah, it would be bizarre.

I'm out of a job too, buddy, and in this job market, I'm taking anything that's being thrown my way. I just had a one-week temp job doing data entry for $10/hr. I'd have done it for longer but they didn't need any more data entered.

I'm still waiting for a company to "make their decision" from my interview with them in December. A lot of companies are doing this because they're on hiring freezes-- don't expect anything to come from your 1st choice, and just take the 2nd while looking for other positions.

If you need the money, take the job and quit when you get a better one. Who cares if you screw them over, you are your number one priority and you shouldn't have to worry about stepping on their toes - you know they wouldn't think twice about doing the same to you.

no, at least no one has said anything about paying them.

They are probably paid by the companies.

And I would take the job. The worst that can happen (or the best, depending on your outlook) is you find a better job and quit within a few weeks. Just don't be a dick about it.

Grab that crap job, you can at least stop the bleeding with it. Sure it sucks, but if you hold out for the good one and end up with nothing you're screwed. And if this job sucks who cares if you have to firebomb the bridges to take the better one?

You don't have to tell them anything until the new job comes through.
