Tough Decision - Need Advice 7950GX2/7900GT KOs

Oh yea, all SLi is ready, PSU, Mobo, I just need to come to a final conclusion on whether to get the dual GPU 7950 or 2x of the 7900GT KOs for SLi.

edit: resolution - I dont know, something good, 1024 and up... Whats better overall, not in certain areas - dont look too deeply.

Go with #1 if you're gaming at higher resolutions (1600x1200 and up). Otherwise, your cost to performance ratio isn't as good with dx 10 looming in the near futute, IMHO.

You'd likely be better served at lower resolutions with two 7900GT KOs, depending on the overall prices you're seeing. If I were in your shoes, I'd get the cheaper of the two, and begin saving my acorns for when DX 10 becomes stable.

Patience at that point will give you a stable, solid DX 10 card at a time when the drivers will be solid enough to be worth paying hard-earned money for, unless you're concerned with having the current "best." I bought an eVGA 7950 x2 , which I now have OC'ed to 600/1500. It's a dream, but I wanted two 7900 gtx's in SLI (which I tried in another PC I owned before RMAing and building my own). I'm waiting until Vista/DX10 begins to see it's potential, an then am upgrading.

Save your money, and bide your time. While I understand that PCs are a constant waiting game, if the apex is sought, now seems like a good time to wait until next-gen becomes current.

IMHO, neither of your options suck, so you have a bit more freedom than some.

The 7950 does not beat other high end cards by much at lower resolutions only at extremely high resolutions. Personally I would buy one 7900GT KO for now, then upgrade to a DX10 card with the saved money. This is unless money is no object to you, in that case buy dual 7900GT KO's.

Im not really looking to overclock... Its a choice between 2 good cards in SLi or 1 good card that has 2x the memory. Continue advising 🙂, because so far it looks as though we're split on a decision (so am I).

Might as well put what Im planning to build up... What will be better for this system:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Toledo 2000MHz HT 939 Dual Core
eVGA 133-K8-NF41 Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Mobo
ASPIRE MX-PLEASURE-BK Black Steel ATX Full Tower Case
NEC 16X DVD±R
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (PRT) 320GB 7200 SATA 3.0Gb/s HDD
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Chan Mem.
Antec TRUEPOWERII TPII-550 ATX12V 550W Power Supply
Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS SB0350 7.1 Chan
And a choice for the GFX card(s). Keep it nVidia please.

OPTION 2

anybody suggesting option 1 is dumb as a post.

lets see, 580 mhz vs 500 on the core, 1580 vs 1200 on the ram.

and you dont game at ultra high resolution so 512 MB of ram wont make a difference. For your information you only start to see the benefit from 512 MB at 2048x1536. Up to 1600x1200 the performance is exactly the same.

Tough choice...each has their pros and cons. If you didn't have the mobo yet I'd say go with the 7950 since you'd save a bit of cash by not having to buy an SLI-ready mobo.

I was going to go with a 7950 myself, but the more I think about it the more I am tempted to do what smartazz suggested. I think I'm going to just go with a single 7900GT/GTX or X1900XT for now and save the cash, since the DX 10 cards are on their way and will most likely blow away the 7950 & dual 7900GT setups. It's not like the 7900GTX and X1900XTX aren't insanely powerful as it is now...it's just that review sites and forums like this make everyone think they have to worry about playing every game at 2048x1536 while getting 80fps. 😀

Ok, about the DX10 thing -- which card(s) will be better for the longer-run w/o upgrades (to DX10)? Or will we all have to convert within the next 2 years to DX10 cards?

P.S. Lets not get off topic here.

you dont have to worry about dx10 until you get vista, which if your smart, you wont get for a while.

If you are not smart, get it as soon as it comes out in January 07, and upgrade your videocards right away too, to 1st generation dx10 cards. Then cry in a corner because of allt he problems you have.

I dont plan on phasing to dx10 until late 2007, when most of vistas problems should be solved, and 2nd generation dx10 cards should be out.

Great, so 2x SLi 7900 KOs or 1x Dual GPU 7950? 🙂

Why not read the 7950 reviews and decide for yourself? Plenty of comparisons with 7900GT-SLI setups there, including comments about how much heat you can expect the 7950 to generate. Could be more or less than a dual 7900GT setup depending on which coolers the GTs are using...

If money doesn't matter go quad-SLI, lol 🙂

2 KOs. no question about it.

then roughly a year from now, you can start looking into getting vista and 2 new dx10 cards.

no no no no no no no.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 $366.99
Intel D975XBXLKR "Bad Axe" $199.00
Antec P180B $109.00
NEC 3550A Black $30.99
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (PRT) 320GB $99.99
G.Skill 2GB DDR2 800 $189.99
SeaSonic S12-600 600W PSU $139.99
Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic $81.99
MSI Radeon X1900XTX $416.99

It's been proven that the x1900XTX outperforms the 7900GTX in all games except of Quake 4.

I think everyone here will agree that the computer I put together will get you alot more for your money.

I prefer Nvidia, but I think I'm going to use an ATI card this time.
