I think Chinas history of being separate kingdoms and the wars that happened because of it dictates its current view and its strict enforcement of supporting one china. I think the balance between giving their citizens freedom and maintaining their one China policy are at odds the same way our 1st amendment and the spreading of misinformation/lies/propaganda are at odds with a United States. I don’t know what a solution is that won’t violate/weaken their policy (for lack of a better term).
I think a more transparent China would go a long way and I think accepting free speech while placing clear cut restrictions on speech would also help.
As China becomes more prosperous and becomes more westernized, maintaining the control they have will come to a head and something will break. The path they are on could see the rise of more frequent events like Tiananmen Square.
I say the above knowing that my knowledge on China is very limited.
