Ok, this is bizarre. I bring the laptop home to do some work over the w/e, take it out and use the touchpad to browse around a bit. suddenly the touchpad doesnt' work.

The Tpad is still turned on according to the little light above it, but it's as if the computer doesn't see it. Is there some sort of key combination that can disable the pad that I might have accidentally hit?

USB mouse still works fine. Drivers are all still there.

Man, the hp live consultants suck. i just finished an hour long chat with them, and in the end she said to try reinstalling the drivers. I of course had tried that hours before.

Anyway, here's some more info. When I go to Device manager the touch pad is not under the mice there. But, when i go to view->show hidden devices, it shows up. However, there's a yellow exclamation mark in it.

Is this a hardware issue?

yup.

It then automatically re-installed the drvers at the next startup. Still no go.

Tis also possible that the cable came loose. Happened once to my sister's laptop - her keyboard just stopped working completely. Cable was slightly out of place.

Other option: Download Knoppix, and see if the touchpad works in Linux.

I got impatient and reinstalled windows entirely. The drivers again automatically installed, but the touch pad didn't work. So, it's either a loose cable or a shot touch pad, as far as I can figure.
