Touch input is not working

So for the past three weeks, my tablet laptop's touchscreen capabilities have been going on and off. The pen and and finger input weren't working for a few days, then after a few days this problem went away. When the problem returned, I did a system restore to a point when the computer was working fine, and I was still having trouble. For extended periods, I could not use my finger to digital pen as an input device, only to have the problem seemingly fix itself a while later, and the cycle repeat.

I'm at the point where I'm totally w/o touch input. I re-downloaded all relevant drivers from the manufacturer, and even reinstalled windows 7. Initially after the reinstall, it wasn't working, but after I had been using the computer for a few hours it briefly returned, only to go away again.

Do you think that this is a hardware problem? The laptop hasn't undergone any physical damage that I know of, nor does anything look broken. I don't know what to do now.

Highly unlikely to be a driver problem. Likely a damaged screen ribbon cable assembly. Warranty it.
