Total Noob question

If a mobo has ATI chipset, can I use a Nvidia video card, despite the ATI chipset. I think the answer is yes, but I want to make sure. Thanks.

Short answer: YES (for one graphics card).

To run the graphics cards in tandem (nVidia SLi or ATi CrossFire), you need that manufacturer's chipset. This isn't for any technical reason, it's just that they want to sell you a whole package for more profit.
