Thanks for the posts. I’m about to leap into this as I have bone on bone and had a cortisone shot a few days ago. How wonderful that is. I have my first consultation in a few days.

Any questions I should ask? Any questions you wish you would have asked? I’m 65. In pretty good shape, used to gyms and working out but more hobbyist then muscle builder. Horrific pain with out cortisone but it’s only been really really bad for a month.

Severe medial compartmental osteoarthritis. The first in osteo my life

I’m no expert but cortisone worked well for my father at first then it became less & less effective. Been a long time since he had his knee done so I forgot but I think cortisone got to the point where he’d need nearly weekly injections to avoid pain/stifness.
Replacing his knee fixed that.
I have noticed he appears a little stiff after sitting for a longtime recently but his knee was done at least 12 years ago. He says it’s his age but it doesn’t bother him.

We are about the same age, I'll be 65 in March.

I had a cortisone shot too when I first went to the doctor... only lasted two days. It also delayed my surgery for 2 months as they cannot do it with the cortisone in your system. They also offered gel injections to cushion the knee and I refused as it is only a delay and doesn't fix anything. I didn't want to get two shots every three months either.

After consultation with several very good surgeons I am going to parrot what I learned from them and from a relative. Do not get a partial knee replacement as you will be back sooner than later for a full knee replacement. They say that it heals faster. No it does not heal any faster. I know some that have had a partial and they were getting a full replacement in less than 8 years. I'm not a fan of doing it twice.

The full healing takes about a year from why my surgeon says. I can now pretty much confirm this as I going on 8 months and I'm still seeing improvement in my knee as time passes.

Pick your surgeon based on his proven results. I had picked my surgeon based on this and I went back to work full time after 5 weeks. No problems. A friend had his done about 13 weeks ago and he still cannot get full range of motion after 13 weeks and will have to get more surgery to fix it.

They also do it out patient if you do not have any other health issues. I went in the morning and was home by late supper time with my legs propped up.

Do the Physical Therapy! All of it.

Do not let the PT Person hurt you more than needed, some pain is to be expected.
It causes swelling and swelling increases the healing time. Remember they work for you.

Get an ice machine. Use it a lot.

Take your pain medications as prescribed. Do not wait for the pain to build up before taking it. Once the pain starts it is harder to catch up.

I wish you the best! Let us know how you are doing.

Edit: I also meant to say you will need someone at home with you for at least the first few days.

Thanks everybody - this is sort of a shock as 6 weeks ago I was walking 18 holes with very little, if any, pain. Then BAM!! For the last month I never slept for more then 2 hours at a time. Knee ballooned up.

I was told since I had a cortisone shot for pain they need to let that wear off ??? I suppose it's a good time to go to the gym and build some leg muscles.

I had arthroscopic surgery a few decades ago on the other knee so I know the routine/pain/PT part.

I am so glad I found this group. Fear of the unknown and all that. Still getting used to the idea.

Mine did the same. Fine one day then boom instant pain whenever I put any type of strain on it. I even had to put on the emergency ( parking ) brake when I stopped at a red light, it hurt to keep the brake pressed.

Knee replacement is a lot different than arthroscopic surgery, by leaps and bounds.

Lots of good information here:

If your about to have surgery, this is what I went through and hopefully this might help you but reading others posts, your results may be different.

Hello everyone, I am new to this site and this is my first post. I would like to tell you what I went thu and maybe this might help you with your total knee replacement. I am 62 years old and a male. I waited years to have this, I was told by two difference surgeons in the past, if you tolerate the pain, wait for a better device, I did. The older style knee replacements is still commonly used. This older replacements would cut the femoral head and the Tibia heads off and insert a metal rod into the shaft of those bones. It was inserted to hold the metal ends which now make up the knee. This is old school and I waited for the new replacement type. Nowadays, there is a less invasive technique, still barbaric but not as bad. It’s newer and I hope it’s better. If they offer this type of knee replacement go with it. My brother last year had knee replacement and they did it old school way. Here is a link to the type I had done and the video is my doctor, dr Bugbee, I am not promoting this video for him. https://www.scripps.org/services/orthopedics/knee-replacement-surgery

I had the replacement surgery 9am last Wednesday and today is Thursday. It has been 1 week and 1 day. All I ever heard from everyone before surgery is, “you have to do was do physical therapy and stretching”. I injured it years ago in football. I am a 62 yr old male and try and stay as active as my knee let’s me.

If your having surgery I think you should read this. People tell you stuff but this is concise and I have just gone through it. This is my story and stories may differ from patient to patient, so this is just me.

1) Don’t worry so much about the surgery. You probably been thinking of this for years and you have finally decided to do it. That is the biggest hurdle. Try not to worry or watch graphic videos of it. That will just make you more afraid.

2) When you get out from surgery you will feel ok. Warning, first night, As the night goes on, the nerve block given to you starts to wear off. The pain starts to come on as the block wears out and this is when the meds start coming. In my case, I did not have the best night sleep but it was ok. So expect rough first night but It Was Not As BAD as it Sounds. You can deal with this, just heads up.

3) After surgery, your leg will be SuperSore....( meds help you get through this. The leg muscles on top above the knee Are SUPER SORE and inflamed you cannot bend you leg at the knee. Hurts to rub leg because muscle are all bruised - meds keep it manageable) I hear they put a tourniquet across your leg muscle just above the knee during surgery and that’s why leg is sore. This is my main concern, very, very tight. It has bend a week and still tight but getting better

4) The physical therapist will come to your room the same day to get you up and walk on it? Crazy, huh! You may feel nauseated getting up and walking, I did. I walked out the room and back to my bed. But, good enough. When people tell you, yep they get you walking the first day. Yes, 20 feet but no means walking per say.

5) The therapist will show you stretches. ( ok everyone tells you you need to stretch - Right?) ok do the stretches but do them mildly. Do Not Press It! I did and I know I only made my leg more inflamed. Stretches great, but really Wait for inflammation to go down. You just Had the Doctor fit new hardware inside, so relax on stretching. ( I am writing that to me). Stretching a few muscles can wait a few of days. When the therapist leaves, relax.

6) if you are a man and have to go a couple times a night, there is a plastic bottle you can pee in and the nurse can dump that in the toilet. I wouldn’t use it and choose to get up and go. The nurses aide said, why are you getting up? Your lucky and can lay in bed and go. She was very WISE! It is so easy. Best invention in hospital.

7) if you think your getting better and want to taper off drugs, don’t. Studies show better outcomes while on meds. I have always been the type to taper off but, I AM only doing this once!

8) Home therapist comes bye to help me stretch. She asked me if I have a rash on my chest. I told her no because I didn’t . However, my back has been very itchy and I have been using a back scratcher. I have a rash but it’s on my back. It is aside effect from the medication.

9) It has been a week now and everyday seems the same but my knee does feel stronger everyday. The top muscles are Still Very Stiff and Sore. It still Hurts to bend my knee. The therapist told me some people’s legs get black and blue. It is slower than I had hoped but I know in 8 months I will fell much better.

10) Have you Ever seen that movie, Ground Hogs Day, life is like that. Progress is very slow. I am noticing that my leg is feeling stronger everyday. Today I ventured outside for a walk. I walked 7 houses one way and back. That’s a start.

Worse things - First night as meds wear off.
- muscle of my leg are very tight and sore.
- I would say don’t bother stretching first 4 days. It just hurts too much and you have plenty of time for that.

All in All, I don’t think it’s as bad as I thought it would be.
Good luck Desi

Hi everyone, I have been reading all the great posts about total knee replacement surgery, unfortunately I found out a few weeks back that I’m not a candidate to have knee surgery. The doctors feel the risk of surgery is to great due to possible other health related issues. Both of my knees are completely gone due to osteoarthritis in both of my knees ( bone on bone) I can’t walk even with a walker. I’m basically stuck in a chair because the pain is so bad. Weekly Physiotherapy has not helped one bit in reliving the pain which has been going on for months now. The pain killers have lost the bite in easing the constant pain. I’m not sure what to do now, I feel I’m going to be stuck in this chair forever now with no hope insight.

Any suggestions on what to do going forward or advice would be greatly appreciated.
I am thinking maybe vaping cannabis might help you a lot with the pain. It's said to help a great many people to tolerate pain. You can almost certainly get a medical authorization card so you won't have to pay taxes for medical marijuana, if that's a concern. Good luck!!!

Well here I am again now with my Left Knee needing a total knee replacement. I had Arthoscopic surgery a week ago to repair the meniscus that was torn and he said that the Cartilage is worn off the bone and is in bad shape. He cleaned it up as well as he could, but...

Well the miniscus and cartilage cleanup didn't last very long and I have had to schedule my left knee for total knee replacement surgery on the 30th of June.
Wish me luck that this goes as well as my right knee did in 2019. At least I will have my granddaughter over for 10 days to help the wife look after me.

(look after consists of fetching my coffee etc... while I watch TV in my recliner)

:p

Yeah I know... :p

After my last knee replacement I did really well and was back at work with no restrictions after 5 and half weeks. I hope I do as well this time too.

PT sucks, but it works if you stick with it.

Well I had the Knee Replacement on 30 July at 07:30 AM and all went well IAW the Doctor. Spent a few hours at the surgery center and recovery and was home by 4:00 PM. Drowsy and feeling good still from the drugs etc. Saturday was up and down every few hours for mobility purposes and only minor pain. Lots of swelling and icing. Day three was quite a bit rougher with the pain and swelling. Knocked the edge off with pain killers on schedule every 4 hours.
Monday was PT day one and that woke up new pain centers, LOL.
PT three days a week Mon, Wed, and Friday and walking on a schedule has me off the walker in a week and on a cane at present. Range of Motion is going well at the end of week 2 I have ROM of 5 degrees full extension and 105 degrees and full contraction. Normal would be 0 degrees to about 140 degrees. Getting better daily. Still getting some night pain while sleeping.
