See Munky- people LIKE it when I do things like slip some pre-NDA opinions like "You DO NOT want to buy a X1800XT, because the ownage arrives soon!"

It saves them big bucks not wasting cash on a card they thought was barely the fastest, but now looks very slow?

Driver issue(big surprise) is holding back the x1800XT I am sure, or at least hope.

17 fps makes 1600X1200 a non option for ATI cards in B&W2

Too bad nVidia didn't release this earlier (because they could have) instead of milking it (so now you high end freaks will have bought a 256 and 512 GTX).

Also too bad that nVidia had to create a new price point. If this continues, soon there will be a $1000 price point and you high-end freaks will be telling me that If I don't have a $1000 video card then I can't enjoy gaming the way it's meant to be.

while i've never accused any of your posts were FUD, and frankly more often than not we seem to agree in the points you DO make, IM'humble'O these forums would have a lot less confrontation and be more pleasant to read if you also presented info from the "other side" with the same diligence.

your sig does state "fair and balanced" after all, and it's been my observation that you've gotten into the habit of omitting info which may be favorable (or to the demise of being "pro" nvidia) when quoting or discussing other articles, seemingly just to draw the "ire" of those favoring ati?

while it's certainly within your "right" to add your perspective (what some would call bias) and personal opinions to your posts, if you're going to have "fair and balanced" in your sig, perhaps more of an attempt should be made to actually do so?

just my 2 cents... and sorry my post rambles a bit OT...

 
I wonder how many ATI execs jumped out a window, or sold their BMWs today???

Probably none since they knew this was coming since the 256 GTX. it's a shame they couldnt get the R520 out sooner and gobbled up as much of the high end as they could, cause now, they have no chance at the high end.

Which means what, exactly? It's the same core as the 256MB variant, just with twice as much (faster) RAM and a factory OC. They're saying NVIDIA tweaked the PCB and maybe some of the interconnect layers to reduce power usage, but that doesn't change how the GPU functions.

Which could have been either holding back the gtx or giving it a boost using IQ cheats. It's a shame hardly anyone ever does IQ tests anymore in their so called "reviews". My take is that the 512gtx does not need a totally new driver, because the gpu architecture is still the same. I dont see what there is to "beta" test in the driver unless Nv has trouble figuring out how to make it recognize 512mb of vram. So take it FWIW.

Its because they respined the original G70 core, tweak in there and here. Dont know why they still called it a G70. Notice how the core can go up to 550mhz? and more?

And to Munky: IQ cheats? :shocked:

In reality, the NVIDIA GeForce 7800 512 graphics card had its core redesigned with some tweaks to the layout, to improve the overall processing flow. It also now has a 512 Bbit wide bus.

Seriously, it's the same core. They did not rearrange the ALU's, and neither does it have a 512 bit bus. None of the changes or "tweaks" I have read about would require a new driver for optimal performance.

It has a 512bit INTERNAL bus. External bus is still 256bit-wide, much like the X1800XT.

Considering it took a new driver just to RECOGNIZE the 7800 512, I would say this is a pretty plausible explanation.

 
Anand's review showing memory performance benefits was good. Seems the boost the GTX got was just from the clock boost. I'm sure ATI has a PE edition 1800XT up their sleeve. All you suckers clammering to empty your wallets should just wait a bit, I'm sure ATI will release a money sponge in short order for you to drool on.

You trying to make this personal? Rest assured I have no intentions of hiding anywhere. But since you seem to be into Nv so much, explain to me why a gpu that's architeturally the same as the 256mb model would need new drivers to unleash it's full potential? What's a more likely scenario - Nv releases a beta driver to get all the fps they can from their new big bad card, or that this card is actually a g80 in disguise, with a brand new gpu design, and needs all-new drivers to really see it's full potential?
