TOTAL Criterion Collection for the well endowed

Hey all - this seems like a really good deal for those who have the cash. It's the total Criterion Collection (241 movies on 282 Discs!) available for the first time. For those who have no idea what the Criterion Collection is, google it and find out. Each DVD can usually run for about $30-35.

The titles are available on the website.

List price 7,500
Sale price 4,999 + free ship.

I guess it's a good deal if you've got the money.

It's sad that some people have $5k to lay out on DVDs and other people don't know where their next meal is coming from.

Edit: What's even sadder is that if I had the cash I'd probably check them out.

hot damn that's a nice collection, but all the of the rarest releases are OOP already. And sure the CC has great titles, but some of them are just so out there...even I would be hard pressed to view every single one.

Is there actually anything better about the "Criterion edition" of most of these? Or just a really exprensive re-pressing, with a box with a gold label across the top of it?

Are these the same or different than the "Superbit" editions, which claim to be seperate transfers from film, using a higher bitrate encoding for better picture quality?

The whole thing kind of reminds me of a "Gold" audio CD I saw once. It's the same digital data, folks. As long as the CD doesn't rot and become defective, there is no difference. So unless the Criterion editions are a different transfer, you're not getting anything extra for your money besides a box that shows you paid double what everyone else did. Just IMHO.

I have a few Japanese singers' 24 k and regular CD. "Gold" audio CDs sound better, much warmer and smooth, you can really hear the difference. But it is not suitable for every recording, for example, Tina Turner's "private dancer" re-issued by JVC, first it was planed for an 24k gold disc, but 24k sound lesser energy. Criterion Collection are good as they are, new HD-DVD and Blue ray DVD are coming next year, better wait even you're flithy rich.

HOT DEALS rotating memberships in Netflix, Blockbuster, WalMart, or Hollywood video: $10-$50/month
HOT DEALS DVD burner: (internal) $10 (external) $70
HOT DEALS blank media 100pk: $30
HOT DEALS Sharpies: free

Paying $5k to get a bunch of movies you don't want and few that you do: Ridiculous

For those with money and morality there's MC . . . for everybody else there's DVDShrink.

Criterion is simply the best, they research each title, find the absolute best source, make the best possible transfer to digital, and finally deliver a complete package with all the background material, trailers, commentary, posters, etc. They pretty much invented the whole Special Edition idea that others have copied.

OTOH I agree media concepts are about to change, so maybe this is a lousy time to buy.

Criterion is an independent studio that basically invented the concept of "special edition" back in the days of Laserdisc. Criterion titles tend to have excellent audio and video transfers (although some of their earlier DVDs have been eclipsed by updated transfers from the original studios) and outstanding special features. When they were doing Laserdisc, they were able to secure the rights to many mainstream titles (since most studios weren't backing the LD format at the time). Now with DVD, they generally put more obscure and foreign titles, but their quality is still outstanding.

And I suppose you advocating and encouraging piracy is a hot deal?

These out-of-print titles are not included: BEAUTY & THE BEAST (Original release, spine # 6), BANK DICK, THE; BLOOD FOR DRACULA; DEAD RINGERS; FLESH FOR FRANKENSTEIN; HARD BOILED; HOW TO GET AHEAD IN ADVERTISING; M (Original release, spine #30); NOTORIOUS; PLAYTIME; REBECCA; ROBOCOP; SALO; SID & NANCY; SILENCE OF THE LAMBS; SPELLBOUND; STRAW DOGS; THE KILLER; UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING, THE; and THIS IS SPINAL TAP.
still 282 discs for $18 a pop, that's pretty good for criterions.. share the love for 10% more.. but unless you are a major collector and completest, renting some of these titles is a better idea.. Some are really amazing, and some are a bore fest..

Different strokes for different folks..
