Tossing you the keys, how do YOU fix GM?

OK, so Congress wants a plan to fix GM and return to profitability.

P&N'ers, lets get to work.

Let me offer the following to start:

Redundant branding must end.
[*]End the Buick brand
[*]End the Pontiac brand
[*]End the GMC brand

No more "kissing cousin" vehicles of any sort.

yup.

Ironically the people at the japanese run company plants in the US working NON union are making more and have better benefits.

Buy out the rest of the workers in the job bank and terminate the program.

Retire older facilities that cost more to operate or modernize them as appropriate.

Increase the quality of parts/engineering used in automobiles to make them more attractive to consumers.

Eliminate redundant brands/lines as needed.

Agree with the UAW on the operation of non-union shops as older facilities are retired. The UAW needs to acknowledge competitive realities.

Structure the majority of executive compensation into long term stock options that promote sustainable growth of the company and long term strategies.

Start with 10 billion in government equity investment and 15 billion in loans.

kill Buick and Pontiac to focus on GMC (industrial vehicles) Chevy (consumer) Cadillac (upscale), spin off saturn, or kill it.

either end Honda/Nissan/Toyota tax exemptions or give Chrysler/gm/ford equivalent exemptions.

renegotiate pensions etc for all employees, not just labor.

Revoke dealerships with crappy service.

pass universal health care (goodbye legacy costs lol)

Fresh new management starting from the top on down might fix GM, along with a complete restructuring of their business model, business practices, union contracts, and accounting practices.

A tall order. GM needs today's version of Lee Iacocca on steroids to save their sorry ass.

The UAW already will assume the responsibility for retiree health care in 2010 so that's one less millstone.

Decrease number of models significantly - at most one model per segment build on similar platforms (ie. full size car and minivan).
Eliminate GMC, Buick
Eliminate Saturn models that overlap with Chevrolet.
Eliminate specialty models that are risky (Aztek) and low volume (Camaro) - R&D and marketing is too costly.
Shut down all low efficient plants and divert resources to fewer facilities.
Shut down 50-75% of dealerships.
Take all R&D in SUV's and put into hybrid, direct inject, diesel engine technology.
Develop short term partnerships with Toyota, Honda, Nissan to complete joint design/manufacture to tide over until a stronger brand is created.

Most importantly...build cars people want to buy...

why kill GMC? why keep pontiac?

GMC and Cadillac are really their only segmented brands, chevy, buick, pontiac and saturn are a muddled mess of rebadges.

a few others:
File for bankruptcy, get union to agree to reasonable concessions (remove jobs bank, allow plant management to fire useless floor workers and hire people who are productive). Reward workers when company is performing well through fair profit sharing program. Improve mgmt/worker relationships.

Cut layers off the top heavy management, why do they need so many VP's? Cut the executive wages and tie their bonuses/incentives to long term performance goals. Replace the Board of Directors. They're obviously poor stewards of the company.

Most difficult task: merge GM and Chrysler or Ford into one company. Utilize best practices, technologies, product lines, quality practices (pull more out of Nummi), and talent from each.

Supply chain management, ....

One thing from my side is that as a consumer, I am sick and tired of going online, building my ideal car and then....

THEY NEVER HAVE IT.

It's always off on the options, never the right one. Never has the full set of exactly what I want. This is clearly due to limiting the scope of search to only the local area and never a nationwide search. Internet searches need to have that as a default option. Destination charges will apply, and a kickback to the local dealer of some sort - but for crying out loud - give the customer what they WANT!

1- Don't allow the present managers of the big 3 make another car.
2- Re-tool all plants for manufacturing public transport systems
3- re-build effective, quality public transport in the US.

clearly this is a racial issue.

also, japanese makers are in favor of the bailout because they are afraid of what will happen to their suppliers.

LOL

You would first have to declare bankruptcy for several of these things to happen.

Reduce the 8 gm brands to 3 or 4. Reduce GM dealers significantly. GM has 7000 dealerships and toyota has 1500. In 2007 GM outsold toyota by 30% with 5x the dealers.

Reduce capacity to meet product demand.

Kill the jobs bank

Kill any inflexible work rules.

Do as best as possible to support current retirees.

Convert all plants to flexible manufacturing as quickly as possible.

retool management as needed

streamline parts and logistics.

all god, but again it would be nice to be able to do this without formal bankruptcy.

also i would add that warranties should be saved as much as possible.
