Toshiba tablet PC vs Dell 710m?

Anyone have any opinions? I'm looking at spending ~$1200 on a laptop and am seriously thinking about picking the 710m up tomorrow mainly because its so light.

That said the thought of a tablet PC always appealed to me ( I cant figure out why it never took off).

Scouting pricegrabber it looks like there is quite a selection of tablet PCs out there for a good price. Anyone have any thoughts about why I should go one way or the other?

I'm not a heavy traveller but I do want something pretty portable. I was looking at the M200-S838, HDD size is not great but its just a smidge heavier than the 710m. Granted the Dell is configured with a bigger HDD and more ram and a DVD burner of course....

Am I missing something as to why the Tablet PCs aren't selling too well? Is it software issues bugs or what?

I have a M200.

What kind of courses are you taking? I am an engineering student and I have used it extensively. After a while tho I realized that I was using the tablet features less and less. Nowadays I don't really rely on the tablet features all that much, it turns out that even tho the screen is high resolution, it is not a very good replacement for paper.

I have numerous friends who also have tablets and they disagree, they use the tablet features extensively and find them very useful.

The great thing about the M200 is the fact that it is a convertibile and also functions very well as a laptop computer.

Hope that helps a bit.

PS: did you consider the new M400? It has a vastly upgraded screen that seems to be awsome!

Not a student I actually graduated over 3 years ago 🙂

This is just a work/fun laptop. Going on vacation at the end of this month for about 4 weeks and I figured its high time I picked up a laptop instead of hoping to net cafes.

To be honest I expect to get a lotta business use out of it, ie Excel, Word, Powerpoint etc (no displays) and basically a lot of media for myself Mp3s, TV shows etc.

I have an HP tc1100 which is an ultra-compact convetible Tablet PC. I take it to class every day. I have a beefy desktop so at this point I mostly use the tc1100 for taking notes in class and cruising the net - I do most of my high performance stuff on my desktop.

I think the important question in a tablet PC is - is it light and slim? The tc1100 is very light and slim so taking it to class is pretty natural. Another issue is screen res. I would guess that n0e5scape doesn't use his M200 too much because he got the SXGA+ model. If the screen is too hi-res, clicking on things like OK buttons becomes difficult with a pen. It sounds wierd but - go for the 1024x768 model if you have a choice.
