The settlement was for a problem in the floppy drive controller which could potentially corrupt data. I'm not sure if the lawyers were able to prove that anybody actually had it happen in real world conditions.

I think the issue was that Toshiba knew the potential problem existed but never did anything about it.

It was something along the lines of if you were writing a certain x amounts of data (and only x) and the laptop took a big shake right as it was writing byte x that the file would be corrupted. x was a number under 1k, IIRC. Toshiba knew about the problem 5 - 10 years ago and never fixed it. Not like it was worth their money to fix it, since there had never been a problem and never would be a problem with it.

i'm getting an error..... Anyone know the correct link? or did they make it magically "disappear"?

Okay, I figured it out using a little bit of thinking..... go to

www.csd.toshiba.com

hit support.... then look under the FYI for the settlement thingy....

For those of you who received your settlement, when did you get it? I sent in my claim form over a year ago and received a letter from the lawyers about 3 months ago stating that Toshiba will begin issuing the settlements in late September, but I haven't seen a thing yet. Just wondering if its taking them a long time to get through everyone.

It's too late now. I got a $300 check and $225 GC.
Btw, if you have a Philips 6200 or similar HP CDRW, you might be eligible for a settlement. I am waiting for a replacement for my poor 6200, should be an IDE CDRW like 8x4x32.

How can I confirm that they are still accepting claims?

I just purchased a Toshiba from Mercata with the MSN Passport deal. Will that work for a claim? That would turn a warm deal into a HOT deal!!!!

I think we still have chance to get $$$. But I dont know if we can use the old claim form though. This is from a post at cnet.com:

My ISP is going through a transition - sorry if this has come up. I
received my settlement check last week, but not my coupons (10 days, they
said). Today in the mail, I got two claim forms which can be submitted
until 1/29, because they've extended the deadline. As far as I'm concerned,
I'm done. (Geesh - I could submit these and end up having gotten this
computer for nothing. Got two forms because they misspelled my name on
one.)

Thought I'd mention it though, in case anybody out there hasn't filed, since
apparently there's still time.

well, seeing as they only need a photo of the bottom of your laptop or a photocopy of a receipt, it can't hurt to just submit a claim and see what happens...

I just got off the phone from toshiba claims , after trying to leave my number for days etc. The woman told me to submite the form on their site and they are accepting them until mid January. There is no new form just submit the old one on the site! I asked her at least 6 times to confirm! I believe the number I called was 18772230299 and just clicked on an option to get me to a live person
