At Abt electronics, they have Panasonic DVDRV30 for $168 after rebate.
Amazon has SD1600 for $150 after a well-known coupon.

I know the deal about SD1600 is not new. However, looks like this category is Hot Category. So hopefully I can get quick response.

Just one question, can SD1600 play VCD (Video CD)? The info at Toshiba website is quite confusing.

What I don't understand is on the sd1600 only page, they say it includes all of Toshiba's standard
features plus sd1600 features. Well one of the standard features is the support for Video CD... But
according to another page on their same website, there are comparisons which say SD-1600 does not support Video CD playback.

Plan to buy a SD1600 as a gift and I know they will use it to play VCD a lot. Any help will be appreciated! esp, a quick response from a SD1600 owner!

Btw, can I use amazon $50 coupon twice?

That's bizzarre...

I was just reading some reviews on it yesterday cuz I'm looking at picking one up, and I read that it did NOT play CD-Rs, yet there were several people who said that they indeed have been successful in doing so.

¿?

ViperSSD,

Are you sure that it cannot play VCD? I am only concerned VCD (not CDR, the press VCD). Thanks.

I just tried an older Maxell CDR audio disk and the Toshiba 1600 gave me a "disc error" message on the led display.

I think neither the Toshiba SD1200 or SD1600 can play CD-Rs which is a bummer but these are in my opinion THE BEST entry level DVD Players. They're rock solid.

Can any of you lurking DVDTalkers address the VCD question? I know you're out there :)

Here the DVDTalk Hardware forum which may have answers to your question, I recommend using the search feature.

I stopped by Best Buy last weekend, and I have to say that Sony's "entry-level" DVD player (the 360?) looks infinitely better than Toshiba's and Panasonic's (I ordered a Pana last week :)). It's smaller, looks better, has more outputs, and has that sweet joystick thingy that Sony quite rightly is slapping on everything they own. It probably commands a premium over the other two, but I think it might be worth it if you have the extra cash.

Why am I saying this? I don't know :). Just informing you all, I guess.

i recently bought the toshiba 2150. the 1600 does not support vcd. the 2150 does support vcd, but NOT cdr. HOWEVER, i have tried it with my verbatim CD-RW, and vcd's worked. i believe acer cd-rw's have alos been confirmed as working. i am not sure if all cd-rw's work (i am going to get the cheap hypermedia's from outpost to test). quality player though ($200 at best buy B & M). if the hypermedia's work, you cannot beat this player.

<< but toshiba is the only company that i have seen that has a zoom feature >>

Apex (660) has a 2x/4x zoom feature. I use this all the time on my Toshiba 1600 - when I don't want to see the picture in 'letterbox' format. I think the 1x/2x/3x zoom is more beneficial than a 2x/4x zoom because sometimes one may just want to use 1x.

ALERT... i got my hypermedia cd-rw's today from outpost.com... AND THEY WORKED IN MY TOSHIBA 2150! This player is $200 at Best Buy with VCD capability and it plays the 2 brands of cd-rw's i have tried!(even though manual says cd-rw's don't work). and the cd-rw's i got at outpost were $15 for 50. you can not get any better than that.

wassup: Maybe in your opinion, but if someone is not interested in those features, it could be very useful.

I own a Toshiba SD1200, which I have heard is identical(except for the remote) to a SD1600 and play VCD's on it all the time. I am not sure what the guy in Best Buy told Wolverine.

The SD1200 did indeed support VCDs, but the SD1600 does not (although I have not tried it personally).

All SD1600's are supposed to support audio CD-Rs whereas the SD1200 did not; however, many people have claimed to have CD-R support on even the SD1200.

BTW, thx for the info about the Amazon deal - this is the first I had heard it. I'm relaying this info to a friend - I myself was lucky enough to get the SD1600 for $109 shipped during the 800.com deal ;)
