Toshiba SD M-1712 vs. Lite-on LTD-166S

I'm looking for something to rip audio CD's and DVD's quickly. I'd also like a drive that can extract the audio digitally.

Thanks!

If ripping speed is your primary concern, then definitely go for the Lite-on. I have a Toshiba SD M-1502, not the 1712, so maybe they have changed ripping speeds, so I don't know about this.

I'm thinking that the lite-on would be a good buy. I've heard good stuff about the toshiba as well. Guess it can't hurt to try the lite-on. It's only $46.00

I'm a real fan of Toshiba drives. Quiet, fairly fast, and very reliable. I have the SD-M1212 and SD-M1612 myself. The SD-M1712 is OK from what I've gathered, but it only has 192k read cache vice the 512k that the SD-M1612 has. Not sure how much of a difference that makes in the real world though.

I do CD rips using EAC+LAME, but not DVD. In regards to audio CDs, it seems to rip fairly fast for me. I've never bothered to time it. I don't think the bottleneck has ever been the drive itself.

I've been reading a lot about the LiteOn LTD-163 and then noticed that there was a new LiteOn LTD-166 drive which conformed with the new DVD-Multi standard. No reviews are out yet, but I'm hoping that the data performance of the LTD-166 is the same. If so, I'm going to snag it soon...

Any one with any insight?
