Zamboni,

You're confusing issues with facts.

What I paid for a progressive DVD Player 2 years ago (1000 plus was the norm) is irrelavent!

I've got 19000 in my theatre and the progressive player
I bought two years ago, I'm still using and plan to use for
many more years (Your $150 offer is
well appreciated tho :) )

THE POINT I WAS TRYING TO MAKE WAS:

There ain't much spread between the 129.00 Toshiba SD-1700 and the 79.00 Orbitron or Apex
EL CHEEEEEPO special, and if there is only 25 or 50 bucks between them, why
not get something you ABSOLUTELY KNOW will last many times longer.

My comparison might be akin to you going out car shopping tomorrow and a Hyundai is 10,000
and a new Honda Civic is 11,500???

See what I mean???

What a guy paid for a state of the art progressive two years ago is totally irrelavent to that
equation.

You damn sure as heck can't buy 10 of those Korean throwaways for the price of
an SD-1700...........and if you can't, why not buy some quality for 25 or 50 bucks more!

or not...............strictly up to the buyer

zuluwarrior, you are SO right. It's amazing that anyone could miss your point.

I have owned two Toshibas and an Apex, and I'll never get another Apex (only reason I have one is I bought it as a gift and ended up getting it back. Long story).

If you can buy a Toshiba for $99 or an Apex for $75, get the Toshiba every time. The quality difference is vast.

This whole argument may be a moot point. I don't think any of the stores have any of these.

They normally don't carry any electronics, but brought these in for the Christmas season.

I just swung by the store I originally saw them in and they still have 3 left. It looks like they were set up as a special Christmas promotion. I don't know how many, if any more stores have them. But the store in Clearwater still has a few left. Call your local store before making the trip, could save some valuable time...

Just got one and it doesn't come with a S-video cable.

They're $14.99 at Radio Shack.

Is it worth it?

Yes s-video is worth it. If you don't at least use s-video you might as well watch VHS.

so what's with you guys and korean-made stuff? is this going to end up like the flames on taiwan or chinese manufacturers? quality is in the engineers' and corporate hands, not the manufacturer...the majority of high quality electronics are being built in china, taiwan, mexico, and yes korea, i would be scared to use any electronics made in the good ole USA, why? high cost of labor = low quality assurance...

<< How about Sony DVP-NS300?
I went to frys, and there was an open box one that the guy would let me have for $100 (reg price $170).
Anyone know how good those are. I don't think they play MP3s, but anyone have one of those?
>>

i bought that for my parents this xmas. to match their new 53inch sony tv. that thing sucks. costs like $180, and it doesnt read cdrs, and the picture wasnt that great. my dad wanted to playmonsters inc from a burned VCD so i returned it for a pioneer 341 or something like that. best buy had the pioneer on sale for $130 just before xmas. that is a good player but i think its 160 again at best buy. the pioneers are nice since they use 2 lasers so they can fast forward faster

Just to add this...

If you're just looking to play a DVD movie now and again .. then the Apex or any cheapo DVD will do the job. Obviously if one is into "burning CD VCD" and/or has a high end TV/Monitor they would be opting for the more expensive players. (although the Apex seems to do just fine with burned discs too)

FOr me... I could use a cheap player for the kid's to watch Disney stuff on DVD... so the under $99 model is just fine for me.

Does the SD1700 come with component video cable? If not, any leads on hot deals on these?

Component video cables are not included. Your choices for component video cables are as follows:

- Best Buy: Acoustic Research component set: $29.99.
- Radio Shack: component set: $39.99.
- Radio Shack: individual video cable: $5.00 x 3.
- Radio Shack: Gold Series Audio Video dubbing cable: $14.99.

I went with the last choice after reading up on some tests that the individual performed on this particular cable. Apparently, RS utilized a good quality coax cable for the audio cables along with the video cable with this set and for me, it was the cheapest option. Unfortunately, I don't have the SKU number for this item.

I found the best deal on actual COMPONENT video cable at Target BM but I just found them online as well. I bought them a couple of years ago at regular price of 19.99 but right now they just happen to be on sale for 17.99 :D. They have been great cables for me. I went from S-Video to these however and can't compare to other types of "component" video cables.

Target Component Video Cable

Hope this helps...

Walmart has some good component cables for 19.99. Phillips brand IIRC. They look high quality: thick and gold plated. My TV isn't good enough to spend money on monster cables.
