Toshiba PDR-M21 digital camera + win2k = camera not found

I get the error "camera not found" when I try to access my camera with the Twain driver in windows 2000. When I first got the camera, it worked fine in win2k for months. Then one day, it started giving me that error message. I re-installed the drivers and checked the camera.. I could find no problem. I re-installed win2k a few weeks later and it worked again.

I'm having the same problem now, although I haven't re-installed win2k again. I think I removed every little bit of its driver from windows and the registry, but it still gives the same problem.

A few other tidbits:
- the camera shows up fine as a USB device
- the twain driver is the only way to access its data
- there is only one driver set available (on the original CD) and there were no updates to this camera's firmware
- new batteries don't help
- toshiba support doesn't help much other than show me basic fixes

Thanks in advance for any information 🙂

It's more than likely the software that you are using.

Which software are you using? The Sierra Imaging? Arcsoft?

What probably has happened is that you have multiple Twain Drivers installed.
Some programs when installed, overwrite the original twain drivers in the WINNT directory.

Have you installed Service Pack 3 yet?

I'm using various imaging programs to access the twain driver. Mainly paint shop pro, but I've tried microsoft imaging and the image software that came with the camera. They each give their own error such as "device not responding" after the twain driver says "camera not found."

I could need the original Twain drivers? There's a winnt\twain_32\toshiba\pdrm21\ directory, but I've made sure it was deleted before re-installing. There's no other directories in \twain_32\.

Are there some other drivers that I don't know about? And do those imaging programs you mentioned have their own twain drivers for this camera? I think I may try to get one of those programs soon.

Thanks for the help 🙂

Most software use their own set of twain compliant drivers.

The main drivers are in the root of the WinNT directory (twain.dll, twain_32.dll, twunk_16, twunk_32)
The original files should be dated 1996 unless you have installed SP3.

The twain_32 directory is were programs are supposed install their version of the driver, but it is not always the case.

Sierra Imaging or the Arcsoft programs should have come with your camera.
