On a older Toshiba Laptop, the CD tray won't stay closed. It is open a inch. When I try to push it closed, it just springs open again. There is no 'click' when it normally would ;latch. This just started to happen out of the blue.

There was and is no disc in the tray when it unlatched by itself, nor was it banged or dropped. This is also when the Laptop is on ot off.

Any ideas? BTW, that release button has no affect.

Pull the drive out.sometimes dust collects on the locking mechanism and just needs to be blown out.

(3) BTW, the Release Button has no effect

1. The locking latch is not engaging. Something is preventing that. Could be a dust bunny, or - it could be worn off or broken off. Since the drive is "older" it could just be worn off.
2. With the above condition, presence of a disk makes no difference.
3. The release button has no function if the locking latch is not engaged or missingt.
4. If the suggested cleaning does not work, replace the drive, or use an external USB drive.
