I agree wyvrn, also the PS3 399 model will probably sell more next month than this and the addon combined.

If it is really a one time sale, then it will have zero effect on the market. A drop in the bucket. It would have to be a more consistent approach to underselling BluRay to have any effect. But the potential drawback is in perception of quality. If they go full into the cheap route, people may not buy them. In retail, I was taught that people often based their opinion of quality on the price of an item and saw that in my own sales experience. They have to be careful and make sure they are perceived as a quality format and medium capable of challenging the other guys.

The VHS shoudl have lost based on your theroy. Beta was better quality and cost more but lost as VHS is cheaper.
That and there is not that big a difference between Blu and HD-DVD like VHS vs Beta.

Price will win this war not perception.

There was more to that battle than price. Sony is much smarter this time around, using the PS3 to market their version. And they have major studios in their corner. The quality is the same on either unit. Price will have a big effect, but you also have to have supply to back that up. If this is a one time deal, it will not sway the market to HD DVD. The newer version of the Toshiba player sells for $298 at Walmart. That's too expensive for most people, including myself, who can wait until they come down. And I am not limited by income.
How much is the cheapest blu ray stand alone? That this can even be sold for $99 indicates that it won't be long before HD DVD players at <=$100 are commonplace.

Read what has already been written in the thread. This is a closeout clearance on a specific Toshiba model. It is a one time sale. The replacement model is $298. Still not bad, but we are far from widespread $100 high definition DVD units.

The A3 model seems to be going for $200-250 depending where you look.

I was on the fence about the $198 player too.. I can tell you one thing, after seeing them for $99 there is no way I am going to pay $200 now. Clearance sale or not.

$100 just became my new price point 😉

I hear you. Yesterday at best buy the guy said he had one of the players left, and when he went to go find it...it wasn't there so someone had just bought it. Now after walmart pooping out on me I'm pretty disappointed, but I'm definitely not looking in to $200 range anymore. ARGHHH WALMART WHY MUST YOU SELL EARLIER THAN ADVERTISED!

Picked one up this morning at 8:30. Just walked right in and grabbed one. There were still about 5-10 left on the shelf. This was at the St.Charles, MO Walmart.

Going to go to Best Buy over lunch to see if they have any (would like to get the 2 free HD-DVDs).

Good luck to the rest of you

The A2 is still listed as a current model and sells for $200 now. It was that price at amazon, BB, wal-mart, etc... before this. Even then the a3 has the same hardware as the A2 so cost should be the same if not lower after the A2 stops production/runs out.

First reports state the A3 is just a face update, no electronic/hardware changes. Some are saying they are still going to wait until the A3 is out and tested.

crapo
i forgot to check this thread and stop by this morning

i guess my chances on my way home from work will be slim/none

One big drawback I am finding on the Toshiba HD-A2 is that it does NOT restart the disk at the point you were at if you turn off the machine.
So if you want to go away and watch the rest of the movie you either have to leave it on (is this safe?) or fast forward to where you were in the movie.
I wonder if there is a firmware update for this?

Picked one up at the Savoy, IL Walmart this morning at around 8:30. They had about 3-5 that I could see (they did not have them on the shelf, I had to ask), I got one and someone right behind me took the second.

I was able to pick up three of them today.

What is the deal with the 5 free HD-DVD's by mail? Is that only from certain retailers, or is that a rebate or something from Toshiba?

For those of you who are going to buy 300 and Bourne Identiy, you'll have another opportunity for a deal on BF at Sears. I believe the player will be $170 with the 5 Free Movie Rebate. So you figure $110 for the Player + 5 Free Movies and $60 for the 2 movies. Only ~$15 (including tax) more than what you would pay for otherwise.

so does this thing play divx and maybe x.264 movies that i've burned? or do i need to keep my phillips hooked up?

My wife surprised me with the Toshiba player and Clerks 2. Now before I open it should I open it or return it and get a 360 hd-dvd addon? I have a 720p/1080i tv

You need your phillips still hooked up 🙁

The only negative i have about this player.

Well, I spoke with Toshiba support and the disk has to restart from the beginning whenever you turn off the player. He said it was a function of HD-DVD so thats a drawback. Not a big one, for me, though.
However, I can't update the firmware. I downloaded it to my pc and burned it on a disk like Toshiba said. Says incorrect version.
Toshiba support says I should try different burning software (I tried Nero 7 and DeepBurner).
So I asked for a disk to be sent. They are out of stock and backordered.
I tried to update via ethernet but says it can't find the server. I will try it with my router later instead of directly into my cable modem (despite the fact it did get an IP, subnet mask, etc). Maybe the server was down.

Hows that a function? My wife and mother in law watch a lot of movies that have few to no chapters so they have to have a DVD player that remembers where it left off. Cheapest I can find is Sony and i rather not give them my money.

Id keep the A2... 360+HD Drive is pretty loud.. Definitely noticeable during quiet scenes (in most normal configurations.

Had my dad check at home, and he just got 2 at the WalMart there. Apparently the one in Mount Vernon, OH has a lot left for any Ohions out there.
