Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD Player $234.88

Agreed shawn. I got in the 199.99 deal but still pretty hot. I love the player. Its great at upconverting dvds also (it compares favorably with oppo upconverting players). It is a little slow starting up which does not bothering me and toshiba has been great on firmware updates. I don't regret for a minute buying this player.

yeah, it upconverts regular DVDs beautifully and I've been renting HD DVDs from blockbuster online.

I tell you, the one thing Toshiba still has in their corner...they are most likely going to reach widespread sub $200 first. At that point even a person like me who doesn't need it is tempted to get on the action. Getting to a price where losing that much money isn't that big of an issue is a BIG deal for Toshiba right now.

It looks the rebate is valid wherever you purchase it as long as it's a retail sale (not closeout, refurb, open-box, etc...).

But the titles you can pick from aren't the greatest. Maybe two of them are worth owning IMO, but free is free 🙂

It's interesting to me that Microsoft doesn't market (or provide support for) the 360 hd dvd player as an external drive for PCs. It's it a $200 hd dvd player for people with HTPCs or any recent machine, which would probably sell fairly well if people knew about it and if it came with the software/drivers. I guess they want to push 360 sales.

Actually that is a better deal. The $234 was through Electronics Expo (and is still available) but shipping was extra ($19 for me.) The $248 price is through Amazon.com and shipping is free.

Ditto. Clearing cookies, leaving FireFox and re-checking Amazon still left it at $249. Same for IE with cookies cleared.

Ah, you're right. The wording of the original post confused me.

I think it's also interesting that, given a standalone unit is going for right at $200 now, they wouldn't drop the price on their 360 hd dvd addon to sell more units.

I think at $150 or less, they would push a few more units out the door.

Of course, I bought one and now I'm looking to sell it, so I guess that says something.
