Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD Player $371 Free Shipping

I have this player and I've never seen such stunning HD quality on my TV. It is also one of the best upconverting players on the market. The latest firmware allows you to take advantage of Dolby TrueHD and DD+.

Search around for a coupon to bring the price down to $371 with free shipping, enjoy.

cool, this is the one with a 1gb sodimm and a p4 2.5 powering it.

this actually isnt a horrible deal . if you really wanted HD -DVD on your PC. , you could actuually rip this thing apart.

take the NEC HR-1100A in it out (which is a pretty expensive drive, but it even comes with the bezel! and is 40pin in there) put it on your pc, and get an hdcp vid card and software (not sure you can actually get this).

then sell the 1gb sodimm for $80 or so... and bam HD-DVD ROM drive for $290.

When you add in your card, it said to enter some code to apply for discount and the code is highline right there on the page. Final price. $371. 😀

20lbs weight typically tells it has a good trasnport and chassis.
How widely available are the hd-dvd selections, nowadays?

Or you can just connect the HD-DVD player to your HDTV w/ HDMI cable and push play.

There are a good amount of titles out so far. I personally am happy enough with my 1080i up convertor. HD-DVD is probably best on 50"+ sets to see a nice difference.

Nice find. Been looking at these on eBay to get a feel for street price.

As for # of HD titles, check out NetFlix, they have an HD-DVD section. So far looks like a decent selection. Better than Blu-ray so far at least.. 😉

Anyway, if you have the HDTV to appreciate it, and the money to invest in a short term solution, it's a good buy. I'm still not sure I want to pull the trigger on a first gen HD-DVD player, but if I did, it'd be this...

Only one question remains: The player's reliability?
Being Toshiba brand I have had issue with its TV line-up in the past.

The HD-A2 will NOT have analog outs for those who might not receivers with HDMI and still want TrueHD. TrueHD will not pass over optical. Analog or HDMI only.

Buying a HD-A1 was the best thing I've ever done for my movie and HD experience. The films are stunning, the player is excellent. The only minor issue with the player is the initial load time but after that, it'd been flawless.

i'm just too unsure to commit to a single format right now, i think with blue ray disks having the bigger capacity they are going to win in the long run, but i hate both sides for not agreeing on a standard and causing the slow adaptation of high definition movies. what a shameb

How is 499 less than 371? It will be a while before the a2 hits 371.

The a2 is in many ways a step backwards. There's no way to extract the best audio tracks from it without having a hdmi reciever.

The hd playback on the a1 is astounding, really makes you wonder about the overcompressed garbage we're fed from the broadcasters.
In addition, the a1 is an outstanding upconverting sd player. (replaced my oppo)

Startup lag is my biggest gripe, but thats about it. Once its running it works great. There is no remote button lag when you use a universal remote.

At this price, even if the format falls completely on its face, i still would have gotten my money's worth. Netflix is awesome btw, great way to sample all the hd movies.

So do you need an HDMI TV to get the HD - Upconverting ? I only have a DVI on my TV, was wondering if those HDMI -> DVI converters work or even better HD over Componant R G B connectors.

I think he meant since the A2 is coming out, it will drop the price on the A1 even further.

Correct. You need HDMI for upconverting and a HDMI-DVI converter will work. Component doesn't.

The A1 is out of production. I don't really expect the price to drop more. Especially since the A1 has analog out (required if you want True HD without having HDMI).

The bigger capacity is a marketing story. Right now, HD DVD has superior quality with less storage capacity. What will decide the format war is:
a) availability of titles (currently a tossup)
b) pricing (HD DVD drives are at least 50% of BR drives, although the PS3 is an attractive alternative)
c) the porn industry (they more or less handed the victory to VHS during the VHS/Betamax war)

So, this thing is almost a full-blown PC inside?

it is a linux box. supposedly it runs off a usb 256mb flash card inside running some form of redhat.

the problem with this unit is supposedly it takes something like a minute to "mount" the disks. that and because its basically a PC (why a p4... i dont get it) it is pretty large for a movie player.

Usually I just grab a drink, make some popcorn, or set up my receiver settings, and by the time i'm done, the movies ready to go. It really doesn't take that long- you get used to it.
