The slot loads also can't play those funky mini or business card cd/dvd's. But they do look cool (for example: the mac cube slot load implementation). About negative air-pressure, I doubt you'd have as much opportunity for dust to run through your slot load drive, then into the case, as you would for dust to come in through the numerous other cracks and crevices that run directly into your case. For example: the space above and below drives, little spaces between slot covers (on the front and the back), etc. Your best bet is just to have more air blowing in through fans than blowing out, then you have dusty air in your case, but no dust in the crevices... Or you could put filters on your fans AND have positive pressure and have a really clean case.

I was on the fence on this when I saw it at techbargs, but when I noticed the hardware card I jumped on it. Now that I'm reading these comments I don't feel to good. I will complain if it does not come with a card, as the discription has several references to the card, and it's clearly more than a pricing 'typo' and I don't think it's a error from there suppliers (that would seem to cover product specs), and the paragraph reproduced by ghouldini seems to cover pricing errors, not product description errors. But then again they could say it should cost $164.

I just called buy.com this morning and I think I got the clueless department. The girl on the phone said that if it was in the description then that is what we ship. I really think that the is the description for the more expensive drive combo pack which is listed for around 165$. Let me know if anyone gets it with a decoder card. Good Luck!

the scsi drive is never in stock at these places.

onvia has the ide too for $103 or so.. shipped.

Had to buy the scsi from hypermicro 2 day fed ex for $160 :|

Does it explicitly say HARDWARE decoder?

If it comes with SOFTWARE decoder, that's not misleading either. Sheesh.

See for your self:HERE. or look at the post above with the description cut and pasted.

It gives several specs on the card, and says the type of product is dvd drive/decoder card combo

Come on folks, it's pretty CLEAR that the drive INCLUDES the Decoder Card AND Decoder Software.

It's right there in the description. the Drive is EIDE, the card is PCI, and the software is the Hollywood Plus.

It's IN THERE! Recently I posted a deal at Onvia ($25 off $100) for this same drive for an end price of $79 (shipped). But that was without the decoder card and no software.

At $100, this is a good deal. If you can use a coupon or get shipping for FREE, then it's a GREAT deal! I have this drive and it's NICE! You can't go wrong with Toshiba.

Good hunting!

yup yup...and if they don't send it, give them a scan of the page (or tell them to look at it), and BAM, they can't refuse.

In the same boat with Unsickle and Knowlwk1. I jumped on the deal, and I have the page in PDF to argue. I know in their fine print they say they have the right to refuse and all, but it's worth a try. And since JBlondi called and was told that whatever was in the description would be shipped, I guess we have some more back. It's still a good deal even without the hardware decoder right? The hardware decoder is 37 bucks at CGeeks right? So I could probably just get it from there if everything falls through. And lastly, some people mentioned CloneCD. Is that a free app, shareware or a full feature program I have to buy?

CloneCD has a 'special' feature...Bit by Bit copy. Which means it doesn't matter what encryption was used to burn the CD, it WILL be copied.

For backup purposes only, of course.

The drive is a OEM drive and does not come with a decoder card and/or software.
You can check it on Toshiba's homepage and on On_ia.com. There are several questions answered by their team and it clearly says that all you get is a bare drive.
I think B?y.com can always defend them self saying that it was a typing error and simply give you the money back. Their code for this drive is also different than the bundled package, so how can they ship the other one?

I just checked and my drive was shipped yesterday, I should get it friday (standard shipping). I'll post what I get here, but I suspect it will be a bare drive. If so I'm going to bitch and moan for the card, but I may keep the drive as it's not that bad a price. The discription is clearly more than a typo, as the feature page clearly describes this as a drive/card combo.

Perhaps it is a different decoder card than the hollywood, thats what I though, I'm stupid, where's my card?, It says it's a bundle, where's my card? That's bait and switch, where's my card?...just getting ready for when my bare drive arrives.

My drive is due in tomorrow. I'll go ahead and assume there will be no decoder card.

CGeeks has the following...

REALmagic Hollywood Plus Decoder Card $37.00 + $8 2nd day air to AL = $45

Minus 10% MC Exclusives.... should be $40.50 (if the -10% applies to total order)

(Used cards going on FleaBay for $37-$40 plus shipping)

Not as good as the original post but still almost $40 off the price for the package on Buy.com

Ordered mine Monday afternoon and UPS brought it this evening! Newark to San Jose, CA in 24 hours, not far but pretty impressive for BUY.COM and UPS GROUND! Anyways, it is an OEM Baredrive. Looks like the post above this one is where to get the decoder card. If I get that card, do I need to find any software for this also?

According to UPS, mine has been siting in a warehouse for two days. It's probably just a tracking glitch, but I hate to think it's not making it's way to me. Has anyone who received their drive called buy.com about the card? The description still states it's a drive/card bundle.....

Yeah, I don't want the damned thing if it doesn't come with a decoder. Dammit..should I eGay it (it sells for more or less the same thing there) and save myself trouble trying to return it? hmmm....

Hey, I bought the drive awhile ago with another buy.com promotion. For me it was only $90 shipped a month or so ago. This drive does kick ass. If you don't won't Toshiba, then I would get a Pioneer 16x. Even without the decoder card the toshiba is a deal.

I received mine from ordering on Friday.

Bad news ~ only a bare drive. So I gave a ringy to the folks at buy.com and explained to them that there must have been some kind of mistake because the page that was selling this DVD said it included the decoder card (going as far as displaying specs about the card!)and software. Well after a few minutes the guy came back and said that they would send out the whole enchilada to me. Feeling a bit gidy, I inquired about the possibilites of cross shipping the item, so that I will not have to experience a huge delay in getting the drive. "Hold please...sure we can do that" ~ at this point I am ready to ask him to throw in some free DVD's!!! Just kidding INstead I ask him about return shipping charges and he sends me a pre-paid shipping form via e mail! This guy gets the Customer Service Award for the day.

I am still apprehensive about getting this deal. However the moral of my story is try and treat the people on the other end of the phone with respect and they will give it back to you. They are not the ones that can ultimately make the decision, however they are the ones that will plead your case to someone in charge.

Good luck everyone else with their DVD's. It might be niteresting to see how many receive theirs.

PS ~ I wonder where one would post a new topic re: Customer Service reps at these online companies that we "work" with so much. It would be great to be able to reference someone's name if you had to call in with a situation. First name only of course or Employee number. The plus would be that the rep. that helps out will benefit at their Company also 🙂 Just some thoughts. e mail me what you think
