When I make use of torrent sites to download legal stuff that I already own and need to backup, I turn on full encryption and forced encryption and use an IP blocking program. And I was under the impression that this made me safe from the IP sniffers...somehow. I mean, even if they sniff me I already own the stuff, but it would be nice to avoid the hassle completely.

I use the encryption in uTorrent, but isn't it just to get around Traffic Shaping?

By IP Blocking do you mean PeerGuardian-esque program?

Meh..I guess I haven't kept up with the movements lately, just been doing what works and still works. =p

Sounds to me like he's referring to the huge blacklists you download ever so often that will ignore known bad addresses in an attempt to help stop the man from finding you 😛. When I used to piddle with torrents a bit, I used it and it's pretty much a 16MB list of IPs.

Yeah its just PeerGuardian that I'm referring to. Same deal, huge blacklist of IP's. Helps you sleep at night I guess. But I would like to feel even more comfy when I sleep, TBH.

Ah, sounds like I'm on the same page then.

Just checking.

Though I don't know all these new fancy trackers you all use.

I miss Demonoid, but most everything can do the job, even DHT works.

Don't use torrents then. P2P is inherently not safe for illegal activities. Even Bram Cohen (the guy that designed the BitTorrent protocol) says it's not safe to be using in illegal manners like that.

EDIT:

Although, when I say "don't use torrents" I mean in illegal manners. Heck, I technically use torrents whenever I download updates for Blizzard games or get some videos from WCM (legit videos). Also, if you want to get illegal stuff, the best tip I can give you is avoid new/popular stuff. If you're going to download some old movie, you're probably fairly safe doing so as I doubt the MPAA/RIAA expects to make a ton of money off some old record as compared to a leaked copy of the latest from their shitty artist that's circulating the web.

IIRC PeerGuardian blocks about 1/3 of registered IP addresses. 😛

I mainly torrent anime, and fortunately copyright holders haven't really been pursuing fansubs that seriously. This is probably going to start changing over the next few years, though.

What was the point of bumping this?

Sites are not getting shut down. And no you don't have to register.

If nothing else, google for what you want and put the word Torrent in the search. Doesn't take a genius to figure that one out...

The only thing that will change this is probably YouTube. The content holders must hate it, because essentially Google is making money off of their IP, because some people are too stupid to actually look up how to download the anime. They know if they kill the fansubbing sources, the anime will get off youtube for the most part.

It's also the same type of reason that we've tried to stop sites like Narutofan (sites that charge to download yet end up lining their own pockets) as they're not only profiting off of an IP that they don't have the rights to, but they're also using others hard work without permission.

I would love to stop torrent'ing but I have yet to find a viable substitution and I'm not going to the hassle of ripping all my CD's and DVD's personally. That would take a damn year.

Actually, if anyone could help me out with a substitution via PM or whatever, I would appreciate it. I am looking into newgroups, etc but I don't really know where to start.

I am tryin to keep it all legal, as much as possible, since I have plenty to lose in my current life...house, car, child, job, and other amenities.

who is WE?

last i read, last year or so most japanese anime companys embraced fansubing because it got their work into markets it would normally never see, and they simply encourage people to purchase it when it becomes avilable in your region

Most (if not all) of the scanlating community? 😕

They do like it to an extent, it gets their content viewed first, but still... it's a double-edged sword. Some may not buy it if they can just get it for free. Also, fansubbers don't make money nor do they do it for money or anything like that (well, some random one might, but none that I know do). But throwing it up on websites like youtube garners undesired attention as Google makes money off of this. It's the idea of keeping it "low key" so the IP holders don't care as much.

The Japanese studios probably don't care about fansubbing because when they sell a North American distributor a license it doesn't matter how many copies over here are sold, they make the same amount of money. I think the people getting up in arms about subs are the NA distributors (Bandai, ADV Films, etc.) who are potentially losing sales. But I also think they understand that their business model is part of the reason fansubbing is so prevalent. IIRC Bandai is starting to look at doing simultaneous JP and NA releases for their anime.

But a distributor may be a bit more reluctant to purchase a license for the IP if the anime or manga is already saturated via underground work. This is why the original intent of fansubbers is to never subtitle licensed work, because the idea was to spread anime that people never had the chance to see before. Unfortunately, fans often feel slighted because honestly... half the time the fansubber's work is better (and free)! I assume you can easily think of a couple examples of highly Americanized animes that sent fans in a bit of an uproar over it. Some just over-edit a show to try to downgrade the intended audience to children rather than teens. One Piece is one of the worst that I've seen (and you can just guess who did it).

Unfortunately, you don't see too many simultaneous releases, but you are starting to see quite a few series gobbled up by licensees before they even get on TV. What the NA distributors need to realize is that anime can get fairly expensive. If you're going to charge me $20 for 3-4 episodes, it better damn well be good and not the typical crap that we get. We're used to decent to great translations with fancy crap like karaoke ( which you won't see on DVDs anyway ) and stylized subtitling. High prices for DVDs are typical in Japan, but that doesn't work here where we have a mindset of lower prices for our media.

This is a good point, if people aren't buying the DVDs then NA distributors may not purchase licenses in the future and the industry will decline.

I do try to buy a few series a year, but being a college student that's about all I can afford. Definitely not at $20 a volume, I'll spend at most $10-15 per DVD if I really like the series. Usually I'll just wait for the thinpack, though.

To be honest, I have a hard time justifying any media anymore (in some cases, as you'll see by my explanation). I download just about everything in 720p as I have a 720p TV. Very rarely do you have anime or TV shows available to purchase in hi-definition, so why would I waste my money on worse quality than what I already have? I've purchased DVD sets of shows like House and Dexter, but I literally never open them. What's the point when I have 720p rips on my server?

Also, as I mentioned above... fansubs just tend to have higher quality than standard DVDs because DVDs use the archaic subtitle format that provides less options and not nearly the fancy effects provided by today's subtitle layering software.

I mean, with that you really wonder... you're spending money on something that is an inferior product in most ways, so why do you do it?

I agree, in some situation it's definitely a downgrade. For example, I have all the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann eps on my PC in 720P with great looking styled subs, so what incentive is there to purchase the DVDs? From a quality point of view, none; I'd mainly be getting them for the extras (commentaries, stuff like that) and to support the industry. If I was rewatching some episodes I'd probably just load the ones I have on my computer up.
