Get a 1/2 inch drive, and a 3/8 inch drive. That will cover 99% of all your needs. Get a good one (Craftsman, SNAP-On) and buy it only once.
 
I seconded Aliencraft. You need an 3/8 and an 1/2. I am quite satisfied with the Click type Husky that Home depot sell for around $50. I have used them for almost 8 years. Not as good as Snapon but same quality as Craftsman and SKS. I don't have much use for the indicator type because most of the time I don't have enough space to see the dial while tighten the nut.
