When the manual say torque something to 15-22. Does that mean pick any number between that and use it for all the said bolts? So i can set the wrench to 20 and use that?

Uhh I guess so? I've never seen that before in any service manual.

Example:

Component Torque
Camshaft Sprocket Bolts 82-95 ft. lbs.
Camshaft Bearing Cap Bolts 71-106 in. lbs.

Intake Manifold Bolts 15-22 ft. lbs.

Pick a number. It's quite difficult to torque ***exactly***, esp if you are using a click type wrench. They usually good for +-20%.

If you needed much more accuracy, it would specify to use say a needle type or more accurate digital gauge.

Set the wrench to 20. You'll be fine.

Yea, that's giving a acceptable range, so picking something in the middle's a good choice.

I brought a needle type but it seems when i use it the scale is on the underside and it made everything difficult so im picking up a click type to get the job done right.

Actually, I haven't used a cheaper manual like a Haynes / Chilton in a looong time, but do they specify ranges like that?

I lost my Haynes manual so i cant remember, but the last time i viewed it i believe so.

edit: Im looking on this torque website for different model cars and it seems some manufacturers use a range and some use a actual number.

what you using to torque?

you need a small inch pound wrench for your intake manifold. even if your wrench has a scale that does down to 10-20 ft lbs, it's not going to be accurate at that low reading, and your bolts may break (or the intake will crack).

personally i never recommend torqing anything except mains, rods, head bolts, and maybe a few other select fasteners. intake or timing cover bolts, no. but if you must, make sure you have the right wrench for the job.

I used this http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/accessories/accProductDetails.jsp?categoryDisplayName=Tools&fromString=search&itemIdentifier=529305_0_0_&productId=529305&sortType=&parentId=6-10&filterByKeyWord=torque+wrench&categoryNValue=100006&navValue=100364&fromWhere=&itemId=364-10&displayName=Torque+Wrench&store=5248&skuDisplayName=1/2+in.+drive+torque+wrench+with+3/8+in.+adapter&brandName=Great+Neck at 1st

but when using it the scale was facing the intake manifold and not me.
So i was going to buy something like this and set it to 20 :hmm: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/ca...micrometer+torque+wrench&brandName=Great+Neck

I see this topic turning into a "the garage" topic :sneaky:

That sort of spec actually is the most reasonable. What are the options?

1. Spec is 18. Now, what's the change you will achieve 18.00000?
2. Spec is 18 ± 3. How's your math? Can you figure it out - probably.
3. Spec is 15 to 21 - math is done for you. Sure the middle of the range is best, but anywhere in there is supposed to be OK.
