torn between intel and amd

I have just sold my PIII 800, soyo sy-6vba133 and curucial pc133 256mb or memory. Because i want new components. This is what I am considering:
Asus CUSL2 motherboard, PIII 933mhz, 256mb of mushkin pc133 or pc150 memory
Asus A7V motherboard, AMD 1000mhz Thunderbird, 256mb of mushkin pc133 or pc150 memory...
Abit KT7-RAID motherboard and same processor and memory as AMD based system.
I allready have case 64mb GeForce 2 gts, soundblasterlive plat., Kenwood 72x, NIC... Just want some views on some base hardware.

I have the little brother of this system, the Thunderbird 900. Everything else is the same and I love it. I moved up from a Celeron 700 and IMHO there is a noticable difference.
 
Change that CUSL2 to MSI 815E Pro if you're going with Intel.

But I'd pick the Tbird setup anyday, A7V is a very nice board.
 
Read the name again, it's MSI 815E Pro, better than CUSL2.

Golden/Chrome Orbs should be adequate since you're not very likely to overclock, if you dont feel comfortable going with the orbs, get an SocketA/370 Alpha.
 
I have an Aplha PAL6035 cooler and run in the low 40's (degrees celcius, that is). The memory is Micron PC-133.

I just ordered a Chrome Orb and a GlobalWin FOP38 to see if I can get it to run any cooler. I doubt it will make much difference but I just want to know.

If you dont want to drop much coin on a fan and heatsink, the Vantec Socket A cooler at 2cooltek.com is fairly inexpensive and works well.
 
I have had an golden orb in the past very very nice fan.. quite and effecient. I am going to have to look up some info on the msi motherboard have heard alot of good things about there bx boards havn't heard anything on there new 815 board thanks for the info. I also have used an alpha on my piii to loud and I could only get my PIII 800 to run at 896 8x112mhz.

I own a PIII but there is no way in hell I'd buy one now. AMD is where it's at as far as I am concerned. I sell both, and we are seeing lots of issues with the PIII's and the i815 chipset boards.

There's a big difference between giving one's opinions vs. making things up. Please specifically name issues with the P3 and the i815 that are not motherboard related bugs exclusive of the CPU and logic chipset.

I don't agree with these posters that the MSI 6337 (815E Pro) is so superior to Asus CUSL2 either. The MSI definitely does not have more features than the Asus, and the Asus has far more bus settings available, and up to a much higher speed as well. Also, the Asus is totally jumperless, the MSI still has its stupid jumpers to change FSB. I will give the MSI credit for a little bit better layout, esp. with more clearance around the CPU socket. Both boards still have stupid power connector locations IMHO.

Ignore anyone that says they won't touch either AMD or Intel, they are just showing their bias. In recent times both of these companies have dominated the various spectrums of the CPU market. IMHO-if you want a 933MHZ Intel system- you could save some dollars and go with with a tested (o/c) cb0 700E@933.

However my recommendation would be the TBird on the KT7 RAID, seems like it would be a very sweet system. There havent been many reports of AMD compatibility problems that i have seen (no more than i have seen 815 bios problems anyway)
 
Hafta agree with damocles....Most seem to be showing bias....But I would get the Tbird 800....Seems to be the best price/performance. If you got the bucks...Hell, 1 Gig man! Of course, if your not in a hurry, I might wait and see what the P4 is gonna do....AMD for now...In the future....Who knows?
 
Emmmhhh...Have you just sold that to buy a new 933 or 1Gig sys!!!. I don't get it, but okey if I where you which I'm not 🙂 then I would buy the Thunderbird system no doubt

I never claimed the 815E Pro to be superior, and never will. I dont know where you got that from.

Lets see, D-LED, FuzzyLogic, true in-Windows BIOS update(Asus' dont really work from what I heard and my experience with the P3V4X), 1 more DIMM...

Nope, both has 1MHz increment, MSI has it up to 166MHz, Asus has it up to 200. Yea right, big deal.

Complete BS, MSI started using jumperless configurations long before Asus does. The jumpers on the MSI are only used to reset to default FSB(66/100/133). All you do in BIOS is to choose a FSB between 66-166. Simple as that.

True, both has bad connection placement, but MSI's is slightly better because its above and further away from the socket instead of diagonally across the socket on the CUSL2.

Finally, the MSI board is a bit cheaper, combined with all those reasons I listed above, it's a better buy than the CUSL2.

Why do you believe that VIA chipsets are non- tried and true? Is this your personal experience with those chipsets?

I have built hundreds of Servers and workstations based on non-intel chipsets, and i have had just about as many problems with them as with the Intel ones.

The only reason for sticking with Intel is if you feel the need to pay more money for less performance.

Remember guys i have a PIII 800 running on a 100mhz bus i have gotten it up to 900mhz not look to really overclock. looking jsut for opinions and suggest only for a new system i am going to get hight than 800 no matter what.. i thought the new p4 was a flip chip like the newer pIIIs??

 
The P4 will be flip chip, but it will have 462(?)pins, so it will not be compatible with Socket 370 motherboards today.
 
what about the rumor of a motherboard that will be compatable with both amd and intel like the socket 7????

any truth to that?
the amd socket A is 462 pins i believe
