Just learned Torchlight 2 is going to be free on Steam for thanksgiving. Excellent game!

Free? I have to wonder about this. It is such a good game that it would not need to be free.

I think OP meant "Free Weekend". Which basically means the game is free to play for the weekend, but you still have to buy it to permanently have access to the game.
You're right, the game is too highly-praised and commercially successful to suddenly be given away for free.
Nothing official yet. Closer to Friday.
And I was assured this is not a free weekend but a limited time giveaway of the full version. Basically a way to say thanks.
Wonder when the MMO is arriving ;-)
Lame, I was hoping for at least a free weekend.
If there's a good discount, I'll likely convince my friends to buy this with me.
if they give it away I will feel pretty pissed as a day 1 paying customer..

This logic is so f'ing stupid
You were fine paying that price up till now. What has to break inside of your head to all of a sudden be pissed about it?
did you not read what he wrote.. FREE as in GRATIS ZERO ZILCH NADA.
so how much of a discount past that were you looking for exactly?

Yes the game was worth it...
but how does that not bother paying consumers.. are you saying that if you bought a Corvette. and it was so successful Chevy decided to give them away free for a few hours after you got yours you would be ok with that?
same thing.. yes it is only 20 bucks but it is the principle of shafting the people that DID buy and support you..
you want to do something to celebrate give a massive free DLC out.. but you don't shaft those that did pay the money.
Sorry guys I need to ask this thread be closed.
I apologize. There was a misunderstanding in what I learned.
An honest mistake but I don't want anyone getting misled.
Again sorry.
Agreed. There are only a couple reasons to preorder a game. It's either a game you want to play immediately, or it's a game for which you want to support the developer, or both. Neither of these reasons are hindered by offering the game at a later date for free for a limited time (or free forever, for that matter).Your analogy completely ruins the entire point of why this wouldn't be an issue even if it was true. For one, it cost you $20 or less... not $60k+. Two, you've had months of playing time that the others didn't get. It wasn't a matter of hours, it was a matter of MONTHS.

This is also bad reasoning. While time is a point of consideration, there is a point of reason.
Do you think if Runic ANNOUNCED that if you waited, you could get the game free in 2 months, they'd have had the same number of buyers on release date? If so I think you're delusional.
Thus comes the point. If you can understand that likely a number of players would have opted to wait given the information, then they also rightly feel duped at this point, as now Runic has already taken their money.
